A Proper Family

What if Peter Pettigrew hadn't escaped? What if, in Harry's third year, Sirius was found innocent? This is the story of what would happen if, starting in his third year, Harry Potter was raised by his godfather.

4. A Silent Dinner

By the time Harry had returned from the graveyard, Remus was home and cooking up dinner. Dumbledore said goodbye to Sirius, Remus, and Harry, before dissaparating on their front step. As soon as the front door clicked shut and Dumbledore was gone, Harry stormed upstairs and locked himself in his room. He refused to come out despite Sirius's pleas and apologies.

Finally, Harry left his room in order to help Remus cook dinner. As Harry chopped up and mashed the potatoes, he silently fumed about his godfather's silence. Why hadn't Sirius at least asked Harry about his parents' graves? Did Sirius think Harry would really want to go back to the Dursleys? No, Harry thought sadly. Sirius just wanted to protect Harry. But still, Harry was thirteen. He shouldn't have to be treated like a child.

Remus tried to make small talk, but Harry wasn't at all in the mood. Once dinner was ready, the three of them ate in utter silence, except for phrases like "Please pass the butter." or, "May I see the green beans?"

When dinner was done, Harry tried to help with dishes but Remus waved him off. He said "I'll do these, you go and talk to your godfather. It's the first night for goodness sakes!" Harry frowned, but he heeded Remus's request. Shuffling up the stairs as slowly as he could, Harry reached the top and knocked quietly on Sirius's door. A loud grunt from inside told Harry that it was okay to enter.

Sirius's room was also fully decorated. He had a large bed, a brilliant Gryffindor banner, pictures taped to the walls, and a few posters of Muggle models in bikinis on motorcycles. Harry had to admire Sirius's nerve.

"Like the room, d'you?" Sirius said from his position on the bed. He was lying with his hands behind his head, feet dangling over the edge of the comforter. "Took everything from my room in my parents old house. Surprised they didn't tear it down when I ran away." Sirius added bitterly.

"You ran away from home?" Harry asked suddenly, forgetting to be angry.

Sirius nodded. "Sure did," he answered. "Went to your dad's place. His parents took me in like a second son."

Harry pondered this as he lay down next to Sirius. They both lay there for a moment, soaking in the silence of the room. Then, Sirius sighed. "My first day as a proper godfather and I've already totally screwed it up."

"You're right, you have." Harry retorted.

Sirius snorted and then began to laugh. Harry joined in, and soon both of them were howling with laughter, trying hard to catch their breath.

Sirius breathed deeply and waved his hand. "I was just stupid like always."

After a few minutes, Harry spoke. "How about," he said quietly, "We say that we were both really stupid."

Sirius chuckled and said, "I think that's a brilliant idea."

"Although," Harry said suddenly. "It was mostly you."

Sirius roared and the two of them fell into another fit of laughter. Together they lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling, and laughing until they couldn't laugh anymore. Then slowly, they both fell asleep.
