Jaz is a young Unaltered girl, living in a world ruled by rich Modified and controlled by vicious Mechanics. She embarks on a interfallacting journey to raise enough money to undergo the process that will turn her into a Modified, but she ends up in a desperate fight for her life where she finds out more about herself than she'd ever thought possible.

1. Prologue

The fate of the Unaltered is never certain. We roam the streets, belonging nowhere, so painfully mortal against the Modified, with their mechanic parts giving them greater strength, better memories and longer and healthier lives.

I was one of the Unaltered, missing robotic parts altogether. The thought of having them disgusted me, even though it was basically how our world worked.

The Modified ruled, the Unaltered were the poor, and the third category, the most shadowy too, the Mechanics, were almost completely robotic, devoid of emotion, and used to keep the Unaltered population down.

I attended school just like the Modified, but I'd never get a job, or have a family. And my studies were different too. History and health mostly, history to rub it in my face about how if only my great, great, great grandfather or grandmother had chosen to be Modified, that I would be living the high life.

Health to show me all the weaknesses and diseases my human body was susceptible too.

But that was all about to change. I had earned a job aboard the Stormer, an aircraft that encircled the galaxy, giving the Unaltered a chance to become Modified, if they can earn enough money to afford the operation.

So looks like my luck is about to change. The flight begins in three days, three more days on earth before I reach the skies, working to earn my place in society, to achieve a better future.

But that's only if everything goes as planned, and have earned enough money by the end of the trip.

It wouldn't be that hard, would it? Did I even want it?

There were so many complications. I didn't want to become a cyborg creation, an abomination. I wanted to live a successful, human, life.

But that wasn't possible.

So I bide my time, and pack my bags. I would be leaving on a Wednesday. All my friends were excited for me, all the Modified people I'd never really been close with looked down on me, as if they couldn't believe someone lowly like me joining their ranks.

I couldn't take much, but that didn't bother me. I didn't have much. Excitement buzzes inside me, along with apprehension.

I'd be leaving my family and friends behind, embarking on the journey of a lifetime through the stars.

Was it worth it?

And what if I failed to dredge up enough cash, and came back a disgrace?

Like I said, so many complications.
