Old Scars

The world is in grave danger. The Three Ancients, three gods that hold unmeasurable power, have been brought to their knees in the wake of the Last Battle, leaving them vulnerable. A new God, Topu, is trying to worm his way in, while one of the Three Ancients, Mirrian, has nearly faded away entirely, having sacrificed himself to save Fen, an Ancient who had been held prisoner. Meanwhile, Piad, the last of the Ancients, has lost all his alliances and is struggling to manage the brunt of his power on his own. But all is not lost, Praa, a minor goddess, has come out of hiding after nearly forty years.

Runa, a young mortal girl and once lover of Mirrian, struggles to right the wrongs and stop Topu, with the help of Praa and a small her band of allies, Cyepa and Jidi, all while grieving over the loss of Mirrian.

11. Chapter 10

-Runa-

Alive with anger I burst into the palace, the so-called House of Bones. Am there, sitting on a throne made from human skeletons and surrounded by spiritual mist, sits Topu.

His hair is scarlet red. He wears a black suit of scaled armour, a sword swung to his side. His hand are stained oily black at the fingers, as if he'd dipped his hands in spiritual ichor. His eyes are charcoal, grey-black and hypnotizing, rimmed thickly with dark kohl and a splatter of blood red powder.

"Topu. Prepare to die." I announce, my voice ringing clear through the marble chamber.

"How foolish, coming from a mortal girl." He returns, his voice strange and lilting, yet raw. I bristle. How dare he call me mortal.

"I am far from mortal, you foolish—" I curse at him with my worst profanity, but he is unfazed, merely chuckling.

"If you are not mortal, then what are you?" He asks, voice filled with mock innocents and curiosity.

"It doesn't matter. All you need to know concerning what I am is that I am very much your worst nightmare." I unsheathed my sword, and launch forward, hurling myself at Topu.

Just before I reach him, as I'm raising my sword, I am suddenly frozen, unable to move.

"Stop!" A familiar voice rings out, the only voice I didn't expect to hear. Jidi.

Cyepa launches into action, Praa following her after a moment's hesitation. But with a wave of her wand she immobilizes them too.

"Jidi! Stop!" Praa shouts, before Jidi silences her with a second wave. Looks of sheer terror cross their faces as they strain against the spells, powerless.

Jidi saunters forward, blessing the blade of her silver knife to my throat.

''You're not doing this." She hisses, her voice a deadly whisper.

"Yes I am." I spit in return, anger a raging inferno inside me.

"Stop, you foolish child!" Jidi freezes in surprise as Eva's haunting voice echoes throughout the chamber. Topu lets out a dark laugh.

"I am no child, goddess scum!" She shouts, anger shining in her usually calm or jovial green eyes.

Eva does not respond, but a flock of ravens surge into the castle, forming a shield in front of Eva, who then instructs them to attack.

Brandishing her wand, Jidi knocks Eva backwards, scattering her ravens. With another burst of magic, glowing bonds of light appear around Eva's wrists, burning so hot and brightly they fill the castle with their heat and ethereal light.

"Jidi! No!" Cyepa shouts, as Jidi momentarily breaks concentration and the freeze spell slips away.

"Yes. Topu is not bad! Can't you see that!? He's the good guy here! He deserves to be made an Ancient in replace of Mirrian."

Anger rips through me anew, and I feel the freeze spell on myself fall away too, Jidi's main concentration on maintaining her control over Eva.

With a flick of her wrist, Eva hurtles backwards and slams into the wall, and it is clear she is knocked unconscious. The freeze spell is thrown back up, and Jidi strides over, once again pressing the sharpened blade of her knife to the soft flesh of my throat.

"Now where were we?" She hisses, shoving me, the knife slicing lightly across my neck.

Eva struggles to get up, while Cyepa and Praa attempt to break the powerful spell holding them. I go limp, no longer trying to fight.

"That's a good girl..." there's nothing recognizable about her. She is all cold menace and fiery anger.

The knife digs in farther, and I feel my blood about to spill.

Topu watches, silent.

Then everything changes.

Fen bursts in the room, looking haggard. His golden hair is messy, his blue and gold eyes distraught. He sees me, and in a blink of an eye Jidi is on the floor, a dagger in her back, crimson blood spilling out like a scarlet waterfall.

Fen stands close to me, as I shake. I look up into his beautiful eyes, and watch as they stayed glued to my own.

"Are you okay?" He asks softly.

My heart beats so fast I think it's going to explode, it takes me a few tries, as I gulp down air, before I can answer.

"I've been better." He chuckles darkly.

"No kidding."

Then suddenly I'm in his arms, as he presses his lips to mine, then pull away in a heartbeat, keeping me steady in his grasp. I swallow hard, unable to tear my eyes off his face.

Then he is shoved away from me by Topu, who has leaped off his thrown and launched forward without me knowing. Fen struggles to get up, and anger bubbles up within me, unleashing my Arben powers.

It's not like Jidi's pixie magic, or Cyepa's shifting. It is subtle, but suddenly I am no longer confined to a human body, with human limits. My potential unfolds before me, and I bask in it, relishing it.

I throw up my hand, and Topu sails into a wall, staying pinned there. I focus my energy on him, condensing it down into a tight band across his throat. My face twitches in anger. It feels good... so good... so much strength... power...

I cross the distance in a footstep, plunging my sword into his stomach, then forcing it upward, letting glistening gold blood and organs I'd rather not talk about spill out, a cascade of death onto the greyish-white marble flooring.

Victory and rage surge through me, as Fen approaches.

"Don't rejoice yet. There's more problems to come."
