Reviewz© Take:

no spoilers

I watched "Thirteen Reasons Why" almost immediately after it was released on Netflix. I'd like to think I watched before the buzz of the millions of other bandwagon Netflix-goers, however, "Thirteen Reasons Why" was a hit from the very beginning. There was an interesting perspective, with narratives from Hannah, the girl who committed suicide, and Clay, a boy who is attempting to figure out the mystery behind Hannah's motives. There are characters that may at first seem like those which would be easy to hate, but then shift to show us another view. Each character either plays a role in Hannah's death, or uncovering it afterwards. The show is told with a series of flashbacks and present-day scenes, which gives a full view of the life and aftermath events that the peers of Hannah Baker experience firsthand. With each episode comes a new set of narration from Hannah via cassette tapes. The viewer gets a firsthand look at Clay's reaction to the tapes and how he reacts with those who contributed to Hannah taking her life. Each episode leaves you wanting more, but never fails to make you uncomfortable. There are scenes that leave you in tears, those that force you to smile, and others that you can't seem to look at. I strongly recommend you watch this series, as it is well written, directed, and features newer actors and actresses.

Some Things I'd Like to Talk About:

spoilers!!!

What the hell happened to Alex?

In the last episode, we learned that a young male was being rushed to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the head. Not until the very end was his identity revealed to be Alex. At first, I thought it to be possible that Justin would commit suicide, as he was in possession of a gun. So, did someone shoot Alex, or was it an attempt at suicide? We had seen that Alex was feeling guilty over Hannah's suicide, as earlier he had seemed to almost attempt suicide in Bryce's pool. Then again, there was the entire situation with Tyler. Tyler purchased a gun on screen, and was seen putting it into a chest with other guns. Also, we saw Tyler taking Alex's picture down while also thinking of a time Alex was nice to him. Did Tyler shoot Alex and was there showing regret? Are the pictures some sort of "hit-list" and he was merely marking Alex off the list? Let me know what you think in the comments.

Who answered Alex's phone?

During the finale, Zach sent a large number of urgent texts to Alex, to then get a reply saying "please call." So, Zach called, but someone who was definitely not Alex answered the phone. Could it have been Alex's dad? If so, was Alex sending the "please call" as a cry for help, or did whoever answered the phone send that text? Also, what did they talk about with Zach? Let me know what you think in the comments.

What is Tyler going to do with all those guns he has?

We all saw on screen Tyler purchasing a gun, then proceeding to put it away in a chest with a number of other guns. So, our question is, why does a high-school geek need all those guns for? It seems that the entirety of the season was setting Tyler up for a school shooter plot. Tyler is relentlessly antagonized by the jocks of the school, leaving him bitter towards the students at Liberty High. This would give him, a recluse, a motive to lash out at those who hurt him. Also, Clay shamed Tyler for violating Hannah's privacy. Tyler had taken many pictures of Hannah, and one in particular (the picture of Courtney kissing Hannah) ruined a friendship for Hannah. Still, Tyler, like Hannah and many other students at Liberty High, seem to be battling serious issues. Let me know what you think in the comments.

What the hell is Tyler doing with pictures of other Liberty High students?
Again, I speculate it's some sort of revenge or "hit-list." Did Tyler remove Alex because he stood up for him in the hall, because he knew he'd been shot, or because he himself shot Alex? I'm not sure what else to think of it. Let me know what you think in the comments.

Will Sheri be charged with manslaughter?

Sheri did end up turning herself in after Jeff's death. Sheri hit a stop sign, which caused it to be knocked down and thus unseen. Later on, a sober Jeff was in a mortal car accident because of the lack of stop sign. Sheri insisted on not reporting her own crash, as she did not want to get into trouble. So, will Sheri face charges for being partially responsible for Jeff's death? Let me know what you think in the comments.

What caused Hannah to trust Tony as much as she did?

The Unhelpful Yoda - Tony - and Hannah shared very few scenes. The two were friendly, but didn't seem to be very close. Besides Tony's easy access to a tape recorder, I don't see why Hannah chose him. Let me know what you think in the comments.

Is Clay's recording enough to convict Bryce?

Clay was able to secure Bryce's confession of sexually abusing Hannah on tape, but will it be enough for a full conviction. Of course, Bryce will deny it to law officials, and seeing as his parents have a large amount of money, I'm sure they can afford a fine lawyer. Still, Hannah won't be around to defend herself against accusations or statements such as "she was asking for it. she didn't need to say anything." I think Hannah's parents will still put up a hell of a fight against Bryce, but I'm not sure it will be enough for a conviction. Let me know what you think in the comments.

Where will Justin go? Will he be coming back?

Justin does eventually confront Bryce about what he did to Jessica and other inappropriate actions. Whilst doing this, Justin reveals he will be leaving town with nothing but some personal belongings, a bottle of vodka, and a handgun. I'm not entirely sure why he's leaving, other than his issues with Jessica and guilt over Hannah and Jessica. Perhaps he thinks he could be seen as a counterpart to Jessica's rape. Either way, I wonder if he will return. I'm sure there won't be a full season two without our old pal Justin Foley. Let me know what you think in the comments.

Who did Hannah mail the second set of tapes to?

Before Hannah commits suicide, we see her mail a set of tapes. We know these were not sent to Tony, as Tony reveals Hannah dropped the tapes off at his house. My only idea is that the tapes were sent to Hannah's friend Kat, the girl who used to date Justin but ended up moving within the first episode. Other than that, I'm clueless. Let me know what you think in the comments.

What will happen after the Bakers listen to the tapes?

We already know Hannah's parents had a lawsuit against the school, and the tapes are sure to help that in a major way. However, I'm not even sure Hannah's mother will be able to handle hearing what her daughter has to say. After all, Hannah does often mention trying to reach out to her parents. I see these tapes only bringing extreme guilt to her parents, rather than help and relief. Let me know what you think in the comments.

How fast will Mr. Porter get fired?

Very fast, or super fast?

Lastly, how the hell will there be a season two without Hannah?

Sure, you could do more flashbacks, but that only does so much. How much more information can you get out of Hannah's life in the short time she attended Liberty High? It seemed that the case and mystery surrounding Hannah's death was wrapped up in the season finale. Now, the show will most likely move on to the other issues that I previously discussed. Still, how do you start a show that has everything to do with Hannah Baker, then cut her out. I'm sure the writers will find creative ways to keep Hannah relevant. Let me know what you think in the comments.

Reviewz© Thoughts:

I absolutely loved this show. It's one of those mainstream "everyone's talking about it" type of shows, but that doesn't take away from the masterpiece that it truly is. You would think it would be hard to love something that makes you cry and yell so much, but 13 Reasons Why makes you sad and uncomfortable in all the right ways. I have several questions that I hope will be dealt with in the coming season, or else there will be a string of plot holes. So far, though, each episode has complimented the others smoothly. I do, however, find it to be in some parts unrealistic for a high school setting. Still, if every show was completely realistic, we may have no real entertainment. The reason we watch television is typically for an escape from our reality. 13 Reasons Why was not that escape. It brought us further into reality, making us aware of real situations and real issues that need to be dealt with. Not only was this show entertaining, but it brought forth a message that many fear bringing up.
