18. Dumbledore the Villian

Remus blinked at the potion master for a minute and asked: "What can you tell me?"

Severus answered, "First things first, since that fateful night 5 years ago, I have since learned the full prophecy that was predicted and let me tell you...it doesn't exactly scream happy ending."

Remus said, "Most prophecies don't; hence the reason that Divination is never a popular subject at Hogwarts."

Severus answered "Be warned that this doesn't end well. The prophecy states The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches... born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies... and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not... and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives... the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies...."

Remus swallowed thickly "Harry is supposed to kill or be killed? How does one prepare a child for that?"

Severus answered "I do not know Remus. I do know however that I will not let you do this alone. Harry is only 5 and until the Dark Lord returns, I will research every tome Light, Dark, or Grey to find a way to keep him alive without damaging him in any way; and maybe by then, we can find a way to defeat the Dark Lord without Harry killing him."

Remus nodded and spoke with sincerity "I trust you, Severus."

Severus blinked at him before recovering "Though, I do think that the prophecy has a loophole that Albus hasn't thought of...Harry technically defeated the Dark Lord already so it is very well possible that the prophecy has already been fulfilled."

Remus nodded "That would make sense. But I do wonder, how does Harry have powers that Voldemort would not know. I have not noticed anything particularly special about his magic or anything. I think if he was that powerful we would know especially at the age that accidental magic starts occurring or even becomes a common occurrence. I think that if it was more so than usual I would have heard something to the effect from his relatives or at least Moody or Amelia would have. I just think we would know somehow."

Severus agreed "That's what I would have thought too, but Divination is so finicky that is hard to decipher what exactly all the information means and what way it will come true. For all we know; it could be talking about a wand, or weapon...something of the sort that we haven't uncovered yet. I just think that you should know so that Albus can't try to force the prophecy on Harry. I think that he was hoping the Dursleys would raise him downtrodden and beaten down so he would revere Albus and do anything he asked, but if that is what he planned, I was not allowed for the discussion because he knows how well I would have stood back and let that happen."

Remus raised an eyebrow but Severus waved off the curiosity "That is a story for another time. We are discussing Albus today."

The werewolf nodded and said "Sorry, please continue. I will try not to interrupt anymore."

Severus nodded "Albus is a very black and white believer. He thinks that things are simple as that and he hates when things get complex. He doesn't understand that not all Death Eaters had a choice like I did. Lucius' father forced him into it without a choice, but he wasn't going to let anyone know that. Sirius' parents forced Regulus into it, and tortured him mercilessly if he refused...they couldn't stand the thought of having another blood traitor son. Yet Regulus, couldn't bring himself to go to his brother because he figured that Sirius would hate him and wouldn't hear a word he said. Dumbledore doesn't see this....he sees Death Eaters and that's it. He would never allow himself to think that some people would never dare defy their guardians and would choose to fight against them and join the light side. He doesn't understand that some Death Eaters faced death from their parents if they even contemplated running away and joining the Order, and would put their friends or such in danger by going to him for protection. He doesn't see that though, and that is just the beginning of the layers of Albus Dumbledore."

Remus was shocked, to say the least, especially about the news of Regulus. He just assumed that Regulus was a spoiled child who finally bought into what his parents were saying; he felt guilt threaten to overwhelm him...he should have known better given what Sirius went through because of his parents.

Severus seemed to know what he was thinking "Don't beat yourself up, Remus. Slytherins don't wear their hearts on their sleeve, they know how to hide better than that. It would have been hard to see from anyone but a fellow Slytherin, or from someone who doesn't look closer than face value. You had no reason to pay close attention, you were in a different house and you had your own Black to worry about. We take care of our own, and we took care of Regulus like you took care of Sirius."

Remus swallowed the guilt down for later and turned his full attention to what Severus was saying next.

The Potion Master continued "Now, I cannot tell you everything as Dumbledore has..."

Remus watched the pain flicker across the pallid features as the Potion Master winced and dawning realization hit "Albus has you under an Unbreakable Vow."

Severus couldn't answer, but the werewolf saw it in the other wizard's obsidian black eyes. He said "Tell what you can around the vow, I know you will tell the truth. I am sure that the truth will come out eventually, but until now, don't risk your life and/or magic to tell me about the old man."

The Potion Master looked at Remus gratefully and said "Albus doesn't want people to see how controlling and manipulative he is. He pats shoulders and strokes backs long enough to get what he wants and for it to come back and bite you. However, I think he is banking on the Dark Lord coming back so that he can defeat him once in for all and become the wizarding world's savior and be damned with what happens to Harry; he is just a pawn to the old man. He was furious when he found out that you had removed him from the Dursleys and that is why he called in Molly Weasley, because she is a loyal follower and would have raised him to follow Albus blindly and without question; whereas you will raise Harry to be cautious and apprehensive, especially after what he let happen to Sirius."

Remus nodded in agreement, that was true. Especially after the custody battle, he would never trust Albus Dumbledore again and would raise Harry to be cautious and apprehensive of the man.

Severus continued "I have caught glimpses of some of the plans that he had made. He was hoping that the grief of losing James and Lily on top of finding out that Sirius was the "traitor" would drive you to him as he was the only one who ever gave you a chance and that you would be loyal to him because of it. He was going to send you on Order Missions; dangerous ones in hopes that you wouldn't come back and therefore you wouldn't be able to interfere in Harry's life.....or his plans. I don't think he accounted for how close you and Sirius are or the fact that the Goblins would help you gain access to the Potter wills."

Remus' eyes narrowed "It probably would have worked if it wasn't for Callidora. I think Sirius knew something was up though, he left me a letter saying that her identity and that if anyone found out she would be in danger, and for some reason my intuition told me that included the Light side, I found myself really protective of her when Dumbledore showed up that night to deliver the news."

Severus frowned "What about her identity is that Sirius wants to keep a secret? I understand that her identity and person would be attacked finding out she was the daughter of a notorious killer, but even the children of Death Eaters aren't attacked, so what is he hiding?"

Remus shrugged "I don't know. I have no clue who her other parent is, and I didn't want to ask Sirius in risk of ears in Azakaban hearing what was going on."

Severus nodded "Has she shown signs of accidental magic yet?"

Remus shook his head "No, which sort of worries me. I can sense and smell the magic in her, but she is late in showing signs of accidental magic, and if she has had any; she has not told me, which is unheard of as she practically tells me anything."

Severus looked thoughtful for a minute "She could just be a late bloomer, as we don't know anything about her other parent or other half of her heritage; we can't make an accurate gauge on her magic."

Remus answered "That is what I was thinking. I figured I would just wait it out."

Severus nodded and said "I will try to figure out more information on Dumbledore and fill you in. It might take time because I have to remember what the exact wording of the vows are from so I can know what I can and cannot tell you."

Remus answered "That sounds fine to me Severus. Just be careful and don't get yourself hurt."

Severus blinked a moment before responding "Alright Remus."

Their attention was turned quickly to the sound of the door opening causing both men to shoot to their feet in alarm. Severus drew his wand and pointed it at the doorway while Remus prepared to bolt with a sleeping Harry in his arms.

All of a sudden a clear voice rang out "Daddy, are you and Harry home yet?"

Remus let out a breath he hadn't realize he had been holding as he called back "In the living room sweetheart."

Severus lowered his wand but was still on guard as the footsteps came towards the room. The Potion Master froze as a little girl about Harry's age entered the room and excitedly greeted her adopted father and new house mate.
