Kasey’s P.O.V

“What do you mean we’re leaving?”

My Father stares at me, “Do we really need to spell it out for you?”

“B-but what about Marie? What am I supposed to tell her?” I ask. I can’t just leave without telling my best friend.

He sighs, “You can head over there now, and tell her.” He sounds so insensitive. I groan and walk out the door. “Be back no later than 9.” He yells after me.

As I head to Marie’s house, I think about what the hell I’m supposed to say. We have been friends ever since, she accidently tripped over my bag in kindergarten. That was seven years ago. Since then we have been like to peas in a pod. I sigh and look up at the slowly darkening sky. How will I tell her? I can’t just go up to her and say, ‘Hey Marie. We are leaving. I don’t know if we will be back. Thanks for the friendship.’ Gosh, I sound so much like Father, so insensitive. I slowly climb the steps to Marie’s house. The door is pulled open before I get a chance to knock.

“Hallo Kasey.” Marie’s Father says, letting me inside. “How are you going?”

I force a smile, “I am good. How about you Jordan?” Mr Flynn has always made me call him Jordan. He claims that ‘Mr Flynn’ makes him sound old.

He chuckles, “I’m going good. Marie is in her room.”

I smile, “Thank you.”

I head upstairs, only stopping to say hi, to Marie’s older brother, Caleb. I knock twice on Marie’s door. “Come in.”

Marie is hanging upside down on her bed, reading a book. I chuckle as I close the door. “That doesn’t look very comfortable.” I comment.

She laughs and chucks a pillow at me, “It’s not. Can you please me up please?”

I effortlessly pull her up and she frowns, “You know how insulting I find that?”

I smile innocently, “What do you mean?”

She chucks a pillow at me, “The way you pull me up so easily.”

I laugh, “It’s not my fault you are a twig.”

She looks down, “Am not.” She walks over to where her book lays and sighs.

I go up to her and give her a hug, “Sorry.”

She sighs again and says, “It is okay.” Marie straights the sheets on her bed and sits. “Sit.”

I sit next to her and give her a smile.

She looks carefully at me, “I know you aren’t just here to make me laugh.”

The smiles falls from my face. I clear my throat and take her hand in mine. I see her gulp. “You know how my Father always travels around?”

The smile falls from her face, “Yeah?”

I sigh, “Well he has to go again, and he is taking us all with him.”

Confusion slowly settles over her face. “W-what do you mean ‘he is taking us all with him.’”

“I mean, we are all moving and I don’t know when we will be back.”

She chokes back a sob, “When are you leaving?”

She yanks her hands out of mine, “How long have you known?”

I try to pull her hands into my lap she isn’t having it.

“Tell me Kasey.” She gets up and starts pacing around her room, she only does that when she is upset.

“I only found out today.” I say softly.

She looks at me, tears slowly sliding down her face, “When will you be back?”

I sigh and run a hand through my hair, “I don’t know.”

She wraps her arms around my waist tightly and I squeeze her, “I’m going to miss you so much.” I whisper into her hair.

“I’ll miss you too Kase.” She sobs.

I gently pull out a small box out of my back pocket, “Goodbye Marie.”

She grabs my hand and squeezes gently, “See you Kasey.”

“I’ll never forget you.” I whisper.
