6. The Sorting Ceremony

A/N: I skipped the boat ride.

"Welcome to Hogwarts," said Professor McGonagall. "The start of term banquet will begin shortly, but before you take your seats, you will be sorted into your Houses." Lily and Toby didn't listen to the rest of it because they knew all of it. When she left the chamber. Lily could hear Hermione going through all of her spells that she knew but Lily and Toby were relaxed and Lily told Hermione what they were going to do and she calmed down a bit. Toby did the same for Harry and Ron. Lily was glad that Toby had made a friend on the train. He never had any friends before he came to Hogwarts but now, he could be a normal kid. Although the kids would probably have to warm up a bit towards Toby because he was Snape's kid. On the other hand, Lily looked nothing like her father and had a bright and cheery attitude that almost no one even knew that she was Snape's daughter.

While Professor McGonagall was gone, something happened - ghosts glided in through the back wall. Almost everybody screamed or jumped except for a few people who were familiar with gohsts. The Fat Friar and Toby were in a short conversation when Professor McGonagall came back in. "Move along now. The Sorting Ceremony's about to start. Form a line and follow me."

The Great Hall looked amazing but it was no surprise to Lily and Toby. When Professor McGonagall brought the stool and put the Sorting Hat on the stool, nothing happened for a moment or two until the hat started to sing:

"Oh, you may not think I'm pretty,

but don't judge me on what you see,

I'll eat myself if you can find

a smarter hat than me.

For I'm the Hogwart's Sorting Hat

And I can cap them all

There's nothing hidden in your head

 The Sorting Hat can't see,

So try me on and I will tell you

Where you ought to be.

You might belong in Gryffindor,

Where dwell the brave at heart,

Their daring, nerve, and chivalry

Set Gryffindors apart;

You might belong in Hufflepuff,

Where they are just and loyal,

Those patient Hufflepuffs are true

And unafraid of toil;

Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,

If you've a ready mind,

Where those of wits and learning,

Will always find their kind;

Or perhaps in Slytherin

You'll make your real friends

Those cunning folks use any means

To achieve their ends.

So put me on! Don't be afraid!

And don't get in a flap!

You're in safe hands (though I have none)

For I'm a thinking cap!"

Everybody applauded after the hat finished it's song. All the first years - except Lily and Toby - felt better because they only had to try on the hat.

Lily and Toby tuned out for a bit because they knew that it would be a while before they came to the letter S. But Lily suddenly paid attention when Professor McGonagall said, "Granger, Hermione!" The hat took a long time to decide - two minutes. The Sorting Hat finally shouted, "GRYFFINDOR!" Everybody at the Gryffindor table clapped. Lily was disappointed. Her father wanted Lily and Toby in Slytherin. The most 'noble' house, he had said. But Lily and Toby thought differently. They both thought that the Slytherins were obnoxious. Lily asked herself, "gryffindor won't be bad. After all, mum was in that House. But father may be disappointed." Lily stopped paying attention until they were close to the letter S.

"Snape, Lily!" Professor McGonagall said. Everybody in the Great Hall started whispering because she looked nothing like Severus and was very pretty.

"Ah yes, very smart, Ravenclaw would do you good. You have the wits of Ravenclaw too. But you are also brave like Gryffindor, loyal like Hufflepuff and cunning like a Slytherin. But your Ravenclaw and Gryffindor traits stand out the most. Where should I put you? Hmm," the hat thought for a very long time. After what seemed like forever, the hat finally shouted out, "Gryffindor!" Lily had just broken the record for being the longest hatstall ever. Her Sorting had taken eight minutes!

Everybody was surprised that she got in Gryffindor. Lily snuck a quick glance at her father. He just narrowed hi eyes at her. Lily was surprised, he had never done that to her, though he had seen him do that to Toby sometimes. Lily ignored it and went to sit next to Hermione.

"Snape, Tobias!" Professor McGonagall called out.

"Oh, yes. Either Gryffindor or Slytherin," the hat said. Please Slytherin. Toby thought. "Slytherin? Sorry, but I don't take personal opinions. But your Slytherin traits do stand out more. All right then, I'll put you in Slytherin."

"Slytherin!" The hat cried out.

Toby let out a sigh of relief although he was sad that he and Lily weren't in the same House.

When Toby peeked at his father, Severus nodded slightly, proud that at least Toby was in Slytherin.

After that, Harry and Ron were both sorted into Gryffindor and some other kids were sorted. When Harry had gone up to get sorted, there had been a lot of commotion. After all, he was the boy who lived.

Once the sorting was done, Dumbledore gave a short speech that consisted several confusing words like 'nitwit', 'oddment' and some other words like that. Harry asked Percy, "Is he - a bit mad?"

"Mad? He's a genius! Best wizard in the world! But a bit mad," Percy replied. Harry looked a little uncomfortable until he noticed the mountain of food in front of them.

Lily and Hermione chatted away excitedly because they were both in Gryffindor while Toby, he had been sorted into Slytherin, had nobody. Although a boy named Draco Malfoy seemed to welcome him because he was Snape's son.

When dinner was finished and dessert was being served, Lily and Hermione were both eating so they didn't talk, but they did catch Seamus Finnigan talking about his family.

"I'm half-and-half," he said. "Me dad's a Muggle. Mum didn't tell him she was a witch 'til after they were married. Bit of a nasty shock for him. The others laughed while Lily, remembering her father's past - she had accidentally wandered upon his Pensieve while he was teaching - wanted to comment but they were already talking about something else.

Hermione and Lily had finished dessert and were talking again. "When do you think lessons will start? I hope they begin quickly. I'm particularly interested in Transfiguration. How about you?"

"They'll start soon enough, and obviously Potions is my favorite," Lily replied.

The rest of the feast went well except that Harry had said that his scar hurt and asked who the person sitting next to Professor Quirrell. "He looks a lot like Toby," Harry had said. Lily rolled her eyes and answered, "Isn't it obvious? It's Professor Snape."

Professor Dumbledore gave us another short speech warning us not to go up to third-floor corridor and some other precautions that he said every year.

And then, everybody sung the school song that went like this:

"Hogwarts, Hogwarts, Hoggy Warty Hogwarts,

Teach us something please,

Whether we be old and bald

Or young with scabby knees,

Our heads could do with some filling

With some interesting stuff,

For now they're bare and full of air,

Dead flies and bits of stuff,

So teach us something worth knowing,

Bring back what we've forgot,

Just do your best, we'll do the rest,

And learn until our brains all rot."

After the song, the prefects led them up to their dormitories. The password for the Gryffindor common room was Caput Draconis. Before Lily went to bed, she received a note from her father. It said:

Meet me in my study at 6:30 A.M. tomorrow.

Lily wondered why her father would ask her to meet at his office.  Was it because of where she was sorted? Was he mad at her? He did narrow his eyes at her after she had been Sorted into Gryffindor. She decided to set an alarm for six o' clock. And then she went to sleep.

Meanwhile, in the Slytherin dormitories, Toby had received a letter identical to the one that Lily had gotten. He also set an alarm for six o' clock and went to bed.
