Not As It Seems

Jenny Sweethouse currently moved from Lawton, Oklahoma, and enrolled in a middle school. But when a boy supposing to be her mentor starts unraveling more secrets about herself, she is starting to have second thoughts about her new home...

6. she knows, part 2

When I walked through the school doors at 8:00 AM, I had expected to see Matt there, waiting for me, or acting like some kind of goofball to Cassandra to keep time while waiting for me to get there. He wasn't doing either of those things, because he wasn't here.

I walked nervously throughout the maze- like school. How will I know where to go if Matt's not here?
And then she came to me. Maybe sometime when I'm not here, Cassandra, you can show her what you learned about this school these couple of years. I smiled. She was my only ticket throughout this school.
Luckily, since she is a ninth grader, I know which class she's in right now. I headed to the middle of the hall door and let myself in.
There was a middle aged woman who was walking around people's desks as they were taking a test. I saw Cassandra at the end of the hall and said "psst."
The teacher looked at me very annoyed- like. "Excuse me, Miss Sweethouse, but is there a problem?"
Cassandra turned around. So did everybody else. I blushed and flipped my long black hair, trying to act cool. "Sorry to bother your class, Miss, but may I please, like, borrow Cassandra for a quick minute?"
The teacher sighed and turned to Cassandra. "Do you accept this?"
Cassandra nodded. She stood up to step outside with me.
"What do you want, Jenny? I was in the middle of a very important test."
I didn't hesitate once to ask her. "Where's Matt?"
She didn't hesitate, either. "I don't know. I thought he was with you?"
"No." I sighed. This question was going to be hard to do, speaking of what happened yesterday.
"Can you please guide me around the school? I just got here, and... I still don't know my ways."
Cassandra didn't frown, or groan, or huff and storm back in the classroom. She smiled and said, "Sure. Lemme just tell my teacher that I'm going to be doing this really quick." She slid inside the classroom.
Why didn't Matt show up? He's showed up every day I've been here for a week. Maybe he knew he was going to be absent, or he wouldn't have asked Cassandra to guide me. Well, he didn't really ask...
Cassandra showed up and gave me a quick smile. "Mrs. Machado said it's fine, as long as I'm back to finish the test in 5 minutes." She started to the opposite hallway slowly so I could catch up.
"Hey, has Matt ever been... absent?" I asked with a tiny little bit of wary in my voice.
"Well, sometimes, on the very bad occasions, mostly. Like, he went absent for maybe a day or two when Ally's disappearance was announced. At least, that's what I've heard from my friends. I only came, like last year."
"And the other times?"
"Well, last year, when I just moved here, he wasn't her the day before or during the time of the mayors death."
"Well, don't you think that's a little suspicious?"
"Well, not really, just a coincidence, or his mom just doesn't like him going to school on bad days."
"Have you ever met his mom?"
"Nah. But i'm assuming."
"You ask a lot of questions, you know."
I flushed. I know I ask a lot of questions, but I have never had anybody notice or tell me.
"That's okay," Cassandra said, reading my thoughts. "It brings out the good in you." She gave me a very wide grin, which just made me laugh. It's like one day we can't even look at each other, and the next we're like best friends. I wonder how that happens.
