“Kayla! You have a letter!” I heard my mother shout up the stairs. I shot out of my desk chair and ran down the stairs.

“Do you think its them?” I asked as she handed me the letter, she shrugged her shoulders and smiled. I rolled my eyes as I slid my finger into the envelope to open it.

Dear Miss Jenkins,

I am writing to inform you that you have been accepted onto our Film and Editing Apprenticship starting from September. We look forward to meeting you inperson and getting to know you further.

Yours Sincerely,

Jacob Ryan
Executive Manager

Underground Pictures

“Yes! I’m on the apprenticeship! Mum look!” I held the letter out for her to read, I watched as tears began to form in her eyes. “Hey I hope those are happy tears.” I said, trying to make her laugh.

“Of course they are baby, but youre going to be leaving home, for the big city! I’m going to miss you.” She pulled me into her arms and I took a deep breath, smelling her perfume.

“I’ll miss you too, but I can always come and visit, we can skype, talk on the phone! This is huge mum, and its exactly what I want to be doing with my life.” She smiled at me softly before handing me the letter. I ran back up the stairs to call Alexa, my best friend.

“I hope youre calling me about a boy or something important you interrupted RuPaul.” She said in a stern tone.

“I got on the film apprenticeship in London!” She screamed down the phone. We had planned on moving to London together for years, and when she managed to get her dream job in fashion starting in August she was hoping and praying that I got this film work too.

“Its actually going to happen! We’re moving to London!” I laughed.

“Yes! I told you we’d do it.” I smiled.

After making all the necessary phone calls to my grandparents, aunts and uncles, school and college friends, I went downstairs to dinner. Mum had ordered a celebratory chinese from our favourite place. I was happy, for the first time in a long time, I felt like I could breathe. I finally had a plan and I was ecstatic to be getting somewhere in life.

The next day I met up with Alexa to go to London to look at apartments. We had this planned anyway whether I got the apprenticeship or not, she was going but had a spare bedroom for fashion stuff. Now that spare room is mine!

I met her at the train station, with a small case as we were staying over night to look around in the evening and have a few drinks. I was waiting at the platform when she arrived. Her makeup and hair perfect as always. I’m lucky if I can get matching freaking eyeliner.

“Alexa! You look perfect as always!” I joked, bowing to her. She laughed and waved me away.

“I got you breakfast. McDonalds. Breakfast wrap. Tomato sauce. Latte.” I pretended to faint. We both laughed and I took the small bag and the coffee. We chatted aimlessly while waiting for the train. It eventually came and we were off, for the beginning of the greatest adventure of our lives.
