The Purge • jb

One night to change everything,

One look to know better,

One love to end the day.

Based on the movie The Purge.

1. 1; Bad Start

I moved quickly around the cafe I worked at, making sure everything was where they should've been, then looking one last time at the clock that showed it was coming up to 6 pm, meaning my shift was ending, considering I finished at this hour.

The only thing that kept me from quitting this job was the extra money I received due to the late shift. Since it gave only one hour to get ready for the annual Purge, no one has accepted to do it. Anyone that didn't take part of any of this wanted to feel safe, being locked up with their family at this time, but unfortunately I didn't get to have that.

The sound bell jingling echoing in the shop made my head snap up, ready to curse at anyone who walked through this door at five minutes from the closing hour.

However, I froze when I saw that the person wore a white mask, dark circles around the eyes, plus an all black outfit, letting me know he probably participated at this event. I could feel his eyes staring right at me from behind his mask, making me visibly stiff.

He didn't make any effort to talk nor move so I took a big breath and decided to speak up so he could leave, "Um... I-I'm sorry but you need to leave, the shop is closed," I managed to get out, my voice wavering slightly. He tilted his head to the side in a creepy manner and without answering, he turned around and left the cafe.

By this time I was almost shaking, but I still succeeded to gather my things and made my way to the front door, locking it behind me.

Halfway through the parking lot, I noticed the guy that was previously in with at least six others, all wearing the same mask, some with Son Of God written on top. They were all hanging around a white van with bats or knives.

I lowered my head at the unwanted attention and reached my car, which was way too close to them for my liking, but I still went with it. I quickly started the engine and left for a twenty minute ride, in the direction of my appartment.

I thought about everything I needed to do when I got to my place in order to be safe for this horrible night, because I wasn't going to encourage any of this sick thing they have the audacity to call anniversary. That is just plain crazy in my opinion, but I can't do anything about it, unfortunately.

I was counting the windows I had to lock with my fingers as my car started to slow down, the roar of it fading away along with it. Confused, I pressed harder on the accelerator pedal, but nothing worked when the car suddenly stopped in the middle of the highway.

I stepped out of the car, kneeling down next to the tire after I checked that everything esle was fine, seeing that it was flat, and that someone had cut it intentionally.

"Fucking hell," I cursed out lout hitting the wheel then leaning my head on the car's door whilst I proceeded the situation I was stuck in; I still had ten minutes of car to do to get home, and it was just one quarter to 7 pm.

In addition to all this, it was complete silence around me, which normaly would be comforting, but the reason behind it made the whole thing more scary than anything esle.

Breaking the obvious tension, loud noise of mutiple engines caused me to spin around, squinting my eyes at the excuse for all the commotion.

I let a small gasp leave my mouth when I recognized the familiar van, leaded by two bikes, the same people from the parking lot.

They stopped far enough and one of them stepped out, waving a knife in the air, the realization hitting me like a truck that they were the one behind my flat tire.

Shocked, I stood there, my feet glued to the ground as fear took over my body. I thought of how I could get out of this, the only option being to run, I twirled around in a swift motion towards the city, making a run for it.

After I reached the city, I found a small alley and ran in it. I leant against the wall, trying to steedy my breathing whilst I thought of what I should do now. It was my first year alone, and I obviously was not handling it very well.

Panick rushed through my body as the sound of loud sirens were heard around the city. A shaky breath left my lips as I closed my eyes, quietly praying to myself and everyone esle who didn't take part of this.

"This is not a test. This is your emergency broadcast system announcing the commencement of the Annual Purge sanctioned by the U.S. Government. Commencing at the siren, any and all crime, including murder, will be legal for 12 continuous hours.
