34. The Delivery

Addie’s POV

I’m sleeping in my bed in Mommy’s trailer when Daddy comes in and shakes me awake. I stare at him sleepy eyed and see that he’s worried. I look around and can’t find Mommy. I hear her screaming in the bathroom telling Daddy to hurry up. He picks me up and grabs my blanket and Sarah. I start crying as we run out the door and to Aunt Bex’s trailer. Aunt Bex opens the door and wordlessly carries me into her trailer and into the living room where Vanessa and Victoria are sleeping in their bed and Elizabeth is in her bed.

“Aunt Bex where did Daddy go?”

“He’s taking your mum to the hospital. Your mum is having Allison.”

“Am I going to be a big sister?”
“Yes you are. But for now, you need to sleep. I’ll wake you up in the morning.”

“What time is it?”

“It’s only 11:11. Sleep tight little munchkin.”

I close my eyes and start dreaming about my new little sister. I wonder what she’s going to look like. Will she look like me? Will she look like Daddy? Will she look like Mommy? I’m woken from my dreams to the sound of Lizzie crying. I open my eyes and see Aunt Bex nursing Lizzie and Uncle Marcus feeding my twin cousins. Sunlight streams through the windows. Aunt Bex puts Lizzie down and hands me some of my clothes. I run to her bedroom and get dressed. When I come back, it’s time to go. We get into Uncle Marc’s car and head towards the hospital. At least I think we’re going to the hospital.

“Where are we going?”

“To see your mum and dad and your new little sister. She was born at 2:02 this morning.”

“Que hora es?” What time is it?

“Addie. I don’t speak Spanish. What did you say?”

“I asked what time is it? Why don’t you speak Spanish Aunt Bex?”

“I speak French and German. Your mum speaks Spanish. Your dad knows a bit of Irish but speaks mostly French. In this car, we stick with English. Do you understand? It’s 10:46”

“Yes, I understand.”

We get to the hospital and Aunt Bex helps me out of the car. Uncle Marcus carries Nessa and Toria and Aunt Bex carries Lizzie. I hold Aunt Bex’s hand. We go into the elevator and go into this open room with all my family except Mommy and Daddy. Aunt Jennifer is there with Uncle Colin and Baby Liam. Aunt Ginny is there with Uncle Josh and Hugo and Oliver and her pregnant belly. Mommy and Daddy are nowhere to be found. Aunt Bex sits down and Uncle Marc sits down. Aunt Bex holds a sleeping Lizzie and Uncle Marc puts the twins on the floor to play. Hugo and Oliver play too. I tug on Aunt Bex’s sleeve.

“Will you hold me Aunt Bex?”

Aunt Bex gives Lizzie to Uncle Marc and picks me up. She holds me and we just sit. Daddy comes in with bags under his eyes and a smile on his face.

I get out of Aunt Bex’s arms and run to him. He lifts me into his arms and twirls me around. He carries me down the long hallway and past the window where I saw Lizzie last year. He carries me into Mommy’s room and I see her on the bed with a tube running out of her hand. She sitting there watching TV. Daddy sets me down and I run to Mommy’s bed. I climb up and crawl over to hug her. I put my head on her chest and she wraps her arms around me.

“Hi baby.”

“Why are you crying?”

A single tear runs down Mommy’s cheek. I wipe the tear away with my hand. She kisses my face and holds me tight.

“Mommy’s sad.”

“Mommy can’t have any more children. I promised your daddy I would give him a baby boy. I wanted to give you and Allison a brother.”

“Why can’t you have kids?”

“Allison…Mommy almost died having you and she almost died having Allison.”

“You have me and Allie though. You have daddy. What happens if you do have another baby?”

“Mommy could die and so could the baby.”

“Why did you give me away?”

“Because a long time ago Mommy was going to have a baby boy. He was your brother. Your brother died before he was born and Mommy blamed herself that he died. When you were born I gave you away because I was scared that you were going to die.”

I bury my face in Mommy’s shoulder and she holds me tighter. She kisses my head and I kiss her cheek.

“I love you Mommy.”

“I love you too Addie.”

I push myself up and side off the bed. I run over to Daddy and ask.

“Can I see Allie?”

“Can you or may you?”

“CAN I see my sister?”

“Yes, you MAY!”

Daddy picks me up and carries me over to where Mommy is. Right beside Mommy is a plastic container. Daddy lets me look down at a baby wrapped in a pink blanket. She’s wearing a pink hat and her eyes are closed. It reminds me of when Liam and Lizzie were born.

“Hi baby sister. I’m Addie your big sister. May I hold her Mommy?”

“Yes, you have to be really careful though.”

“I promise I will be.”

Daddy sits me down in a chair and gets Allison. He puts her in my arms and adjust my arms to where she won’t get hurt. I’m afraid to move but I talk to her without moving my arms.

“Hi Allison. I’m Adelaide but you can call me Addie. One day when you’re bigger you can call me Sissy if you want. I’m happy that I have you. You’re pretty. You’ll like it here. Life is mag…niff…I can’t say it.”

Allie starts opening her eyes and two big brown eyes stare back at me. A few seconds later she closes them again and I giggle. Mommy smiles at me and asks.

“What are you giggling about?”

“She opened her eyes? They look like yours Mommy. She has Daddy’s big nose. I’m happy I have a little sister.”

“I’m happy that I have my two beautiful daughters.”

“Mommy what would happen if you got pregnant again?”

“I would get really sick and I might go to Heaven.”

“Does that mean I’ll never see you again?”

“No that just means you won’t see me until you go to Heaven”

“How do you get to Heaven?”

“Jesus…God’s son died on the cross to save us from our sins. Asking Jesus to save you makes you go to Heaven.”

“What do you say?”

“Jesus save me. Or you can say anything.”

“How does it work?”

“You really have to want to be saved. When you get saved you’ll know.”

“I don’t want you to die Mommy so I hope you never get pregnant.”

“If it’s God’s will for me to have another baby than I will. If it’s God’s will for me to die than I will. I love you Addie.”

“I love you to Mommy.”

Daddy takes Allie and I run to climb into Mommy’s lap. She strokes my head and kisses it too. I cry into her shoulder and look up at her. A tear falls down her face.

“Why are you crying Mommy?”

“Because I love you. Did I ever tell you how much I love you?”

“Yes, I love you too. I love you to the end of the universe and back.”

“I love you to Heaven and back twice.”

“I love you to infinity and back infinity times.”

“Who loves you more than I do?”

“Good girl.”
