19. A Day with the Mates

Sean’s POV

I told Lana goodbye and climbed into my car. I drove down the street and met up with my mates at the pub. I parked the car and walked in. Immediately Josh, Colin and Marcus tackled me. They led me to the bar and we ordered a round of drinks. I drank my brewer’s and caught up with my mates.

“Hey Sean! How’s married life?”

“It’s wonderful. How’s little Elizabeth?”

“Can’t wait for her to get here. I’m gonna be a dad.”

“Hey Colin! How’s little Liam?”

“My son is going to be the most handsome boy in the world. I can’t wait to be a dad. Jen and I are excited.”

“Well then let’s orders a celebratory round. We’re all papas.”

“Mate, no offense but Adelaide isn’t biologically yours.”

“Well mate, I got some exciting news. Today’s Lana’s birthday and I’m not with my wife but mates I got some amazing news.”

“Eye mate tell us.”

“Yes tell us.”

“Lana and I are going to be parents in March.”

“Cheers to that. Now lets watch my team beat yours at football.”

“Naw Colin, my team will still beat yours.”

We ordered three more rounds of drinks and ordered steaks and peanuts. We sat at the bar for hours and watched football. When my team won we ordered more beers and left. We drove down to the park and tossed some balls. When we got to the park, I got out and walked over to the mound. Colin tossed me the ball and readied his bat. Marc squatted down and caught all the strikes. Josh ran into the field and got ready to catch any hits. I held the ball and threw. Colin missed.

“Strike one.”

         I threw the ball again.

“Strike two.”

I threw the ball a third time and Colin swung the bat. He missed again.

“Strike three. Out!”
“Colin maybe you should sit out. You’re a bit too drunk to play.”

“No mate! I’m just not on top of my game.”

“Colin, listen to Sean.”

“Shut up Marcus.”

“Colin stops it. You’re drunk.”

“No Josh. I’m going to play baseball.”

“Colin sit your Irish ass down and shut up.”

Colin put his head down and walked to the benches. I didn’t know what to do. I watched my clock and realized I had been in the bar for more than a few hours. I had been in the bar since ten and it was about six now.

“Hey mates I’m gonna head out. It’s been real.”

“Bye man. See ya soon.”

I left the park and walked to my car. I got behind the steering wheel and turned the key in the ignition. I slowly began backing out of the park and nearly ran over a dog. I got out and walked behind the car. I bent down and comforted the little thing. She was all black and fixed and didn’t wear any tags. In Vancouver all dogs that had owners had tags. I looked into her blue eyes and smiled. Lana and Addie would love a puppy but then I remembered the baby. I picked the pooch up and put her into my car. As I drove I stopped at the store and bought a couple dog supplies. I drove home and parked the car. It was nearly seven. I got out of the car and let out the puppy. Lana’s car was the only one left. Addie’s bedroom light was on. I opened the door and carried the dog.

Lana was in the kitchen cleaning up the mess she and her three besties had made. She saw me and saw the puppy. She smiled and then frowned as she placed a hand over her stomach.

“Sean we can’t have a dog.”

“Yes we can. I called the doctor while I was at the store. It’s going to be fine. Happy Birthday baby.”

I put the dog down and she immediately ran into the living room. She was house broken, I could tell. I pulled my wife into my arms and passionately kissed her. She smiled and wrapped her arms around my neck.

“Lana I’m sorry I forgot it was your birthday. We didn’t intentionally plan this day on your birthday.”

“It’s fine Sean. You had fun, I had fun and Addie had fun.”

“Where’s Addie?”
“In bed, she’s sleeping. She wanted me to leave the light on.”

“Oh I’m sorry baby.”

“Sean it’s fine. Actually I’m a bit tired.”

“Okay night. I’ll finish up.”

Lana went up to bed and I walked into the living room. I began picking up bowls, plates and glasses. I put them all in the sink. Then I went into the living room with a trash bag and threw away half eaten slices of pizza. I threw away popcorn bits and turned of the television. I threw away pieces of food and candy wrappers. Then I got the vacuum and cleaned the floors. I folded blankets and straightened cushions. I lined all the remotes up in order and lit a couple candles. After a few minutes I blew out the candles.

I walked back into the kitchen and cleaned off the counters. I put away all the groceries and straightened up the fridge. I put away the dishes and loaded the dishwasher. I swept the floors and then heard the dryer buzz. I walked into the room and put all the clothes into the baskets. I went into the living room and began folding clothes. Lana’s undergarments, Addie’s outfits, my clothes, my shorts, my pants and I finally finished towards ten.

I walked upstairs and checked on Adelaide. I turned off her light and went to check on Lana. She was sleeping peacefully. I walked into the empty guest bedroom and decided I would turn it into a nursery. I got some tools out of the garage and began wiping away old paint so I could apply a fresh coat later on. I had eight months to do this room and I was really excited. I’m sure Lana had Adelaide’s old furniture somewhere. I actually think in the attic. I went into the attic and found Addie’s old cradle. I found Addie’s old crib and baby stand. I found a dresser and some baby toys. I carefully cleaned everything and put it into the room.

Lana meant to keep Addie and raise Addie but last minute Lana gave Addie away. It hurt my heart. I shut the guest bedroom door and went to shower. I took a shower and changed into some sweats. I climbed into bed and wrapped my arms around my wife. She snuggled close to me and sighed. I kissed her cheek and closed my eyes.
