“Next Saturday mam, look,’ I want to tell you something its better I tell you because I don’t think dad will understand.’

Her mother set the iron on the board and waited for her daughter to speak.

“I don’t know how to put this mam but I’m just going to say it alright.’ I’m not like other girls mam.’

“What do you mean, of course you are like other girls, and you’re beautiful.’

“No, I mean I’m different.’

“You look like any other girl to me love.’

“Mam stop a minute and listen; I am different I’m… I’m a lesbian mam. I’ve known it for a long time and I just didn’t know how to tell you because of dad and what he would say.’ “You know how he feels about what he calls queers.’ I would have told you sooner otherwise.’

“I don’t know what to say Iris, how can you like other women rather than a man?’

Because I have tried going out with boy’s mam and I wasn’t attracted to them I was attracted to girls.’

“But you used to play with all the boys in the street when you were little.’ You were a right “Tomboy.’

“Did you ever stop to think that maybe I wanted to be a boy.’ I am a boy in a girl’s body mam.’ That’s how it feels.’

“I see, maybe we can get you some help; you know, go see a Psychologist or someone who specialises in these things. It could be just a silly phase you’re going through.’

Iris shook her head, No mam I’m gay, there’s no way around this and you and dad are just going to have to come to terms with it.’ Anyway I’ve decided to move out. I’m getting a flat in Whitley bay. ‘Margaret and I are going to share the bills.’

“What the girl that came here the other night; does she know that you are what did you call it… gay?’

“Yes she does, and she is gay too.’

“So you and her are going to live together as a couple?’

“Yes mam, I need to be who I am instead of hiding from this.’ I am who I am and nothing will change that. I am still your daughter and I still love you and dad. But I need to be with Margaret so I’m moving in with her next weekend.’

“What does Margaret’s mother think of this?’ does she know?’

“Yes we told her this morning and I guess she is feeling the same as what you are right now.

“What am I to tell your father?’

Tell him the truth mam and if he wants to disown me, well that’s fine; I will just get on with my own life.’

“Do you want a cup of tea mam I need one.’

“Yes,’ I think I need one too. Iris let out a long sigh then went into the kitchen and switched on the electric kettle.
