They reached the car and unlocked the boot and then placed all the bags inside before Margaret linked in with Iris and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek.

We are going to be fine Iris you’ll see. Have you told your mam and dad yet?’

“No,’ I’m telling them when I get back.’

“You will tell them won’t you Iris?’ I mean we will lose the flat otherwise.’

“I promise you I will tell them soon as I get back and I will call you.’

“Aren’t you coming around to my house tonight?’

“Do you think I should; let’s wait until you’ve told your mother first.’

“She is not going to like it Iris, the same as your mother and father won’t like the idea but we are adults they cannot stop us. It will take them a while to get over it especially when we are doing it so quickly.’ Best done this way though instead of dragging it out.’

They saw Rose sitting down at the table, she had bought coffees and a chocolate biscuit each for them.’

“I cannot believe you’ve got yourself a proper job Margaret.’

“Well mam I‘ve got something else to tell you so don’t get mad at me.’

Rose looked at her daughter with concern. “What is it; you’re not pregnant are you. Don’t tell me you’re in the family way.’

“No mother,’ I’m not pregnant.’

“What then said Rose anxiously?’

“Iris and I are getting a flat together.’

“What?’ don’t be daft you hardly know Iris and I mean you have never lived on your own before Margaret.’ I don’t think that you could cope living on your own.’

“I’m not going to be on my own mam Iris is going to be with me.’

“Yes that’s all well and good but what happens when Iris gets herself a boyfriend and she wants to move him in?’

“Margaret laughed at her mother’s comment.’

“It’s not funny Margaret said her mother as she sipped on her coffee.’

“It is mam because Iris doesn’t like boys.’

“She might not now but just wait there will come a time when she does and then what aye.’

“It will never happen mam Iris is gay.’

She may be happy with all of this now Margaret but…

“Mam Iris is a lesbian and so am I.’

Rose nearly choked on her coffee and picked up a serviette and held it to her mouth in astonishment.’

Finally Rose looked at Iris and asked if this was true.’

“Yes it is Rose.’

“I mean how come?’

Iris drank some of her coffee before answering.’

“I found out a long time ago that I was gay.’

“So you calling it gay makes it alright for my daughter to come and cohabit with you.’

“Well this isn’t going to happen I can tell you that much.’

“Mam you cannot stop me I’m twenty two years old, I’m an adult.’

“I will do everything in my power to stop this Iris Deyton; come on Margaret we’re leaving.’

“No mam I’m not coming; I’m moving in with Iris and you cannot stop me.’

“Right then that’s it. I’m going to ring your father he can sort this mess out.’
