Write down your new address and I will send you a cassette.’

“That is so kind of you.’ Thank you.’

Simon got up and went to help Margaret with the drinks. She had bought him another bottle of wine. Simon offered to pay but Margaret would have nothing of it.’

They chatted away for the whole evening and it passed so quickly.

When the evening came to a close Margaret and Iris told the two men that they were going for the last bus but Simon and Paul had ordered a taxi and told them that they would drop them off on the way to their house.

“Thank you both, you are so kind said Margaret.’

“We’ve have had a splendid evening thanks to you too.’

The taxi cab arrived some ten minutes later and it took them home; Iris said she would meet Margaret outside of Asda supermarket at 9.45 a.m.

“My mam will take us there Iris, we can go for a coffee afterwards and I will tell her that we are getting a flat together.’ She won’t shout at me if we are in the café.’

Iris gave her a hug then went into the house. Her parents had left the living room light on for her but had gone to bed; she too would have to tell her mother and father about the flat tomorrow.

Every morning Jenifer Davis waited for news from the immigration offices. It had been over two weeks now and she was getting anxious. She had done most of the packing and began to thoroughly clean the house. She moved and cleaned behind both the cooker and the washer then scrubbed the lino down in the kitchen all the beds were moved and vacuumed behind. Every carpet in the house was hoovered thoroughly. Tom made sure that the grass was cut both back and front and the privet trimmed up. No one would have cause to call them once they had left. She started on all the windows, doing the back ones first with Windowlene then moving into the front with a bucket and clean water with a drop of vinegar which was meant to give the windows a streak less finish. She was just polishing the kitchen window when the postman arrived.

“There’s a letter to be signed for Jenifer.’

Thank you she said as she nervously signed for the letter that she had been expecting.

She went into the house and found the knife she used to open the mail with. Jenifer slid the knife inside then cut along its edge before taking out the folded letter. She took a deep breath and opened the letter and began to read.

“Dear Mr and Mrs Davis we are pleased to announce that your application to immigrate to Australia has been accepted. You are free to travel to Wagga Wagga as soon as you are able but you must report to our immigration office as soon as you arrive for clearance checks. Please make sure you have all the relevant paperwork regarding employment and that your passports are all up to date. If you have any pets then they will have to be placed into quarantine for six months before being allowed in the country in case of spreading diseases. You must have a dog licence and the dog fully inoculated against distemper, parvo-virus and worms.

There was another three pages of rules which they had to adhere to.

Jenifer ran into the bedroom and woke Matty up to tell him.’

“It’s come Matty, we’ve been accepted. Matty took the letter from his wife then read it for himself.

“Well come Friday night we are going to be on a plane Jen.’ He grabbed his wife and pulled her into bed with him.
