search of material to write about. Peter was very quiet spoken and would often be seen at the busker’s night. He would sit in the corner with a bottle of wine with his note book and pencil writing as the music played. Iris knew that he’d be there tonight.

The train came to their stop and Margaret got off and waited for Iris. They crossed over to the other side of the station then walked out of the exit.

They walked along Whitley road past the Station hotel and the many shops until they came to the newsagents and then looked in the window at all the adverts in search of a flat.

“Look there’s one for rent on Edwards Road we could go take a look at it if you like.’

“Come on then said Margaret enthusiastically as she wrote down the telephone number.’ They crossed over then walked down Percy Road where they found a telephone box. Iris open the door and they both went inside. Iris picked up the receiver before dialling the number. She waited patiently for an answer.’

“Hello came a woman’s voice.’

“Hello, I’m ringing in regards to an advert you have in the newsagent’s window about the flat that you have to rent.’

“Yes,’ can I ask if the flat is for yourself?’

“Not exactly it is for me and a friend.

“Is your friend male or female because I don’t want any men sharing the flat?’

“My friend is female; we work together.’

“That’s fine then.’

“Could we come and view the flat as we are in Whitley bay now in fact we are on Percy Road.

Yes of course if you walked down to the bottom turn right I am number 36.

“We’ll see you in five minutes.’

“It looks promising Margaret.’

“Do you think that we will get it?’

“Yes,’ because she doesn’t want men to rent the place for some reason.’

“Oh that’s good. Margaret pushed open the phone box then they walked down the street together until they came to the bottom and then turned right and counted the numbers on the doors until they found number 36.

The woman who looked in her sixties was standing at the window and came to the door when she saw them.

Hello I’m Mrs Redpath, you can call me Ina.’

She had her coat with her and a bunch of keys in her hand Ina put the coat on then told the two girls to follow her along the street.

“You are very young to be looking for a flat is there a reason that you want to rent this place.

“Yes,’ we both feel as if we need to break away from our parent’s house for a little independence. We are not that young; Margaret is twenty two and I will be twenty two next Thursday.’

“I see.’

“Well I have a strict rule if you do decide to take the flat and that is I do not permit men to stay. I have a friend who lives next door and she will inform me if any do turn up and I’m afraid if they do then you will be asked to leave is that understood. I hate to be so hard but the last occupants of the flat left it in a terrible state and it cost me a lot of money to have it repaired.’

How much would you be charging for the rent?’

“It is twelve pounds per week and the flat is fully furnished to a modern standard. There is a kitchen with everything you need, there’s a cooker, and fridge.
