“Have you got any hot tips for me today then Norman?’

“Aye as it happens I do; but I’m not telling you.’

“Gan on man it’s aboot time I had a win.’

Alreet, Haymarket at 3’oclock Soft Sandshoe; mind don’t blame me if it doesn’t win; personally I would back it ten bob each way.’

“What price is it?’

“I’ll give you seven to one if you back it now.’

“Alreet stick a fiver each way on for me.’

That’s ten quid mind Trev.’

“I went to school an aal yer know.’

“Just saying like; it’s a lot of money to lose.’

“I’m not gan to lose though am I?’

Trevor sat and wrote out his other bets for at afternoon then put two 25p reverse forecasts on two dog bets.

He took traps six and four in the first race and traps three and one in the second.

Trevor sat in his usual seat as Jeff Sharp came in and sat reading the form in the sun newspaper. For nearly an hour he studied the form reading the racing post hoping for some devine inspiration.

He didn’t put a lot of money on the GG’s as they were better known as. Jeff favoured a Yankie bet where he picked out four horses from different races and backed them to win. His total stake was £2.10p and he always took the prices that morning before the odds shortened.

“Going in at Nottingham favourite trap four Balcarry Boy 3/1 Trap six Wor Doug 5/1 Trap five Honeys Bunny 7/1  trap one Devonshire Lass 10/1 trap three August Dipper 20/1 trap 2 Coiled Springer 25/1

“Hare’s running.’

Trevor watched as the hare went around on the wire then as it passed the traps the dogs were released the early leader was Honeys Bunny after the first circuit but then Wor Doug got into his stride he overtook Honeys Bunny on the turn.

“Come on! Shouted Trevor as Balcarry boy went past Honey’s Bunny and raced into second place.

“Nottingham result trap six, second trap four.’

Well that’s a good start to the day said Trevor as he worked out his winnings.’

The next race at Sheffield had an early showing. With trap five being the early favourite at 3/1 trap three was 7/1 but trap one was 20/1.

Trevor was kicking himself for not going for trap five.

“Going in at Sheffield.

Trevor could hardly contain himself as the dogs waited in the traps.

“Hare’s running.’

This time it was trap four who made the running on the first circuit and trap one as last as expected trap five came on strong on the second circuit then from nowhere trap one and three were neck and neck with trap five. It was a photo finish and Trevor sat biting his nails as he waited for the result.’

Unlucky said Jeff sharp who had watched the race.

“What you on about, the result hasn’t even been announced yet.’

Trevor stood up and began to pace the floor of the betting shop like an expectant father.’

Minutes seem to drag as Trevor became impatient.

“Come on give us the result. Finally the voice came over on the tannoy.
