into the next game for two lines. Rose could barely hear the numbers as they were being called out at such an alarming rate and it was Elsie who reminded her of the ones she’d missed.

Again the two lines were won and neither of the women was anywhere near.’

“I hope this isn’t a sign of things to come said Elsie as Wayne got straight onto the full house.

“What was that said Rose.’

“75 Rose.’

“I wish that fat bugger would slow down a bit she protested.’

“When the house was called in just forty eight numbers both women wanted five numbers on four of the tickets.

“Your next ticket is red in colour your first number –two and six twenty six-five and nine fifty nine.’ One and two number twelve- on its own number five.’

“Could we have a check please someone in the hall shouted as obviously she hadn’t had time to turn the page before Wayne had started the next game. The frustration was written all over Wayne’s face as he had to repeat the numbers. He would now have to call the numbers even faster to recoup the time that he’d lost.’

The line was called this time in only nine numbers and neither of the women had two numbers on a line.’ “Your two lines – All the three’s thirty three on its own- number six.’

“God if he goes any faster I’m going to report him, this is ridiculous.’

Elsie seemed to catch up rapidly and was now waiting for only two numbers for five pounds. Then the next number was all the seven’s seventy seven.’

Elsie marked it off and now only wanted number eighty nine for the two lines. Wayne danced around all the numbers close to the one she wanted until someone called on number nine.’

No sooner was the serial number checked then he was off again calling the next number.’

“What was that Elsie, I didn’t hear him?’

“Number two.’

Rose quickly dabbed off the number and caught the next. It was a relief when the game was finally won.

Rose turned the page to the green one, her favourite colour.

And once again Wayne raced through them. Elsie wanted two numbers and they both came out one after the other.

“Here shouted Elsie.’ and the game stopped briefly whilst someone from the floor ran to check her ticket.

No sooner had the book been given to her when Wayne called the next.’

The game carried on and Elsie wanted only three for the full house.

There was only 34 numbers out so she had a good chance.

Wayne whizzed on and Elsie found herself needing just one number for the twenty pound house.

“All the sevens seventy seven called Wayne.’

“Here shouted Elsie excitedly.’

“Eeh well done Elsie said Rose.’

“Yes but I have to half with my father who gives me half the money for the books Rose.

“Just give him a fiver and keep the rest.’

“I couldn’t Rose.’

“Don’t be a fool he’ll never know.’
