“Could you take us to Denbeigh Avenue please?’

The cab driver pulled away and chatted to Elsie who told him where they had been.

“Did you catch anything then Tom said Matty Davis to his son as he removed his tie and rolled it around his palm then set in down on the sideboard.

“Yes,’ we caught eighteen fish. I’ve filleted them and put them in the fridge.’

Good lad.’

“Where’s mam?’

“She’s in the bathroom getting changed I think.

The strong smell of beer filled the room and Tom knew what his grandfather meant when he said he didn’t drink beer. Tom’s father wasn’t a violent man when he’d been drinking, he just became melancholy.

“Where’s wor Irene?

She went to bed half an hour ago. I was watching match of the day.’

“I see we drew with Aston Villa.’

“It was Bobby Charlton’s last game for Manchester United as well.’

“Bobby Charlton what a player eh.’ He and Georgie Best are the greatest players I’ve ever seen on a football pitch.’ He played in the best England team we’ve ever had and won the world cup for us an aal when you were only seven years old.’

“Those immortal words will live on for years.’

“What words were they dad?’

“Is your father going on about bloody football again said Jenifer Davis as she emerged from the bathroom in a dressing gown.’

“Get yourself to bed I’ll be there in a minute.’

Good night son said Matty as he pretended to dribble a ball down the passage then shoot. He turned into his bedroom and took of his jacket then sat on the bed and unzipped his boots. He unbuckled the belt on his trousers and let them fall to the floor

Then took off his shirt and vest until he stood in a pair of blue coloured jockey underpants.

He pulled back the covers and got into bed, waiting for his wife to come to bed.’

Jenifer checked on Irene who said she wasn’t feeling well. She had the flu and was sniffing and heavy eyed as her mother went to the cabinet in the bathroom and got
