“I’ll forgive you this time said Margaret as she took the bag with the sandals and walked away from the stall.’

“Goodbye my pretty one: said the Young Turk as Margaret looked around for her mother.

“I think he liked you said Iris.’

“Well I didn’t like him; I mean he was nice, but I don’t like boys.’

“You will one day Margaret,’ Wait until your Prince comes and sweeps you off your feet.’

“I told you Iris, I don’t like boys, I like girls.’

“I see,’ and does your mother know?’

“No I’ve never told her; you are the first person that I’ve ever told.’

“Why did you tell me then?’

“Because I think you like girls too, am I right?’

“Iris was taken completely aback; how could she have known she was a lesbian; it wasn’t as if she was giving any signals to Margaret.’

Iris looked at Margaret and said; yes I like girls too but we must keep this between us alright; because I don’t think your mam or Elsie knows.’

Margaret looked into Iris eyes then said: “would you like to be my girlfriend?’

“What you mean like a friend to hang out with?’

“No I mean a proper girlfriend, you know like a girl and boy.’

I… I don’t know Margaret; I mean I hardly know you.’

“Well you could come around to mine and then we could get to know one another.’

“You like music don’t you?’

“Yes said Iris but so do you.’

“What if I got tickets to go to the City Hall to see Rod Stewart would you go with me?’

“I would have to ask your mother.’

“You said it yourself Iris; I’ve got Down’s syndrome; I’m not mentally retarded.’

“I’m twenty two years old not some child.’ It’s perfectly alright if you don’t want to go, I wouldn’t want to embarrass you.’

“Don’t say that Margaret, because if that was the case then I wouldn’t be here with you now.’

“Alright then so will you come over to my house tomorrow and go to a concert with me.’

“Yes,’ I will; what time should I come over.’

“Come over as soon as you can Iris.’ “Now tell me about yourself; I want to know everything.’

They walked slowly past one of the many café’s then spotted Elsie and Rose sitting having coffee.’

“Give me your bags I will ask your mother to put them in her trolley then we can go for a walk by ourselves if you like.’

“Yes,’ that would be fun.’

“Iris strolled over with the bags.’ Hi, Margaret bought some new clothes.’

“But she has plenty of clothes replied Rose.’

“I think she wanted to buy some more you know, girly clothes.’

“I see.’

“Is it alright if Margaret and I go for a walk around?’

“Yes of course, here there’s a fiver in case she needs a drink or anything.’

“It’s okay; I have money and so has Margaret. We will meet you in Yates bar for lunch in a couple of hours okay?’
