“After the sell by date.’

“Well there’s over a year on these goods madam.’

“There must be a mistake she laughed nervously. My staff can be incompetent at times.’

“Alright, are you taking this food to the home now?

“Yes officer, we were on our way there now.’

“Good, I will come along with you to make sure that they get it.’

’ I mean we wouldn’t like to deprive the old folks of their food or anything would we?’ There’s really no need we will go there personally and give them the food.’

“That is fine but I will come back with you just in case.’

“In case of what?’

“In case there’s no one there to help you unload this food.’

“There’s really no need I assure you, Eddie my husband is very strong aren’t you dear.’ She laughed nervously as she elbowed her husband for a response.

Eddie gave a tight lipped smile then nodded.

Police Constable Richardson said okay “I will leave you to it then.’

“Thank you once again officer said Lily Thomas as her husband pulled away.’

The policeman got back into his car went in the opposite direction and Lily let out a sign of relief.

“What are we going to do Edward I have that funeral at the club on Monday.’

“What if that policeman goes and checks at the home and we haven’t taken the food.’

“Don’t panic Lily we will do the funeral on Monday then any food left we will take to the home  that way if they do check up the home will say that we brought them food from Presto’s.’

There will only be fresh meat going cheap and possibly some chickens on Monday?’

“You’ will have to buy some then won’t you out of your savings that way the police won’t get suspicious.’

“I’d like to know who took all that food today.’ If I could get my hands on them I would wring there bloody necks.’

“We are going to have to be more careful in future aren’t we?’

“What have we got for tea?’

“You will have to open a tin of soup there loads of that in the house.’

“Soup,’ but I usually have a chicken dinner on Saturday night.’

“Well there isn’t any bloody chicken is there; so you will have to just make do or go to the bloody chip shop.’

Her husband sat there in the car sucking lemons as they drove back home.

In the Davis house Jenifer cooked a large lump of roast beef in the oven for Sunday lunch. There was also stewing steak and kidneys in a pot on the stove ready to make pies with. Two roasted chickens were used that night for their dinner with fresh vegetables and gravy. The other two would go to make chicken and mushroom pies. Matty I want you to go in the garage and scrub out that chest freezer that my sister gave me with disinfectant. It still works doesn’t it?’

“Yes, I think so.’

Good because we are going to use all of this food up here and freeze the rest.

All of that cheese will go to make pies with apart from the Kraft cheese slices. “If we are clever this food will keep this family going until the next stock take.’

“Are we going to do this again Jenifer?’

Yes, we are, Irene will let us know when the next stock take is and we will be ready and waiting.’
