Tomorrow Matty we will go to the nursery.’

“What to look at babies?’

“Well sort of Mick laughed. Ollie Burton has his own vineyard and grows his own vines from root stocks. I rang him last night and he’s meeting us at his place in the morning.’ You will then see how the vines are made.’

“How long does it take before we can plant the vines?’

“Not long, but you can talk with Ollie he’ll keep you right.’

Matty let the lads wash up before getting the Barbie started. The music played and again the beer was drank until the early hours. Matty crawled into bed. His back ached like hell and Jenifer rubbed some embrocation into it. “It’s a good job that we have Mick to help us said Matty.’

“Yes, he’s been a great help and so has all the rest.’ I like the community spirit here Matty. They really go out of their way to help.’

If we can get those vines in by next month we will be well on our way to producing our first crop.

“How long does it take before we will see a return on the money you’ve already spent?’

“According to Jackie’s book it takes 3 years to establish a good vine.’

“Three years, that’s a long time.’

“Aye,’ but by then we will have five acres done and we can get different varieties going which we can sell and make a profit on. Next time you are shopping have a look at what wines women are buying and how much they spend per bottle. That way we can cater for what people like.’

“Good idea Matty, it will give us an idea of how much per bottle we can sell the wine for too.’

“Say if they sell it for $4.00 dollars a bottle Jenifer, that’s a quid per bottle we might only get ten bob per bottle.’ One acre of land produces seven and a half tons of grapes twice a year.’ I have to ask Ollie, Micks mate how many bottles of wine we would hope to get from that.’ We have to pay the pickers then we have to buy a hopper to make the wine and then there’s the bottling and labelling process. The first crop will only cover our expenses but the other vines will make us a profit Jenifer. Once we have twenty acres of vines we will be quite well off. I can employ people to help me look after the vines.’

“What are you going to call the wine?’

“I don’t know; what do you think?’

Davis’ wine doesn’t sound classy enough, but Shieldsland Wines does.’

“That’s it then, we will market the wine under that name.’

“I will take a look at the labelling on the bottles we don’t want to copy other brands but it will give us an idea of what they put on the bottles in order to sell it.’

“You are a clever lass Jenifer Davis: said Matty as he kissed his wife.

“I thought your back was sore.’

“Well you’ll just have to help me out then won’t you?’

Matty pulled his wife to him and she lay on top of him in the moonlight. They made love softly and gently. After which Jenifer turned to her husband and told him how proud she was of him.
