The large clear plastic bag was lifted onto the truck and Mick said he would see him early on Saturday with the lads.’

Tom was excited and couldn’t wait to tell his mother how he’d shot the deer.

It took two of them to lift the bag and take it down to the basement where they found a pile of freezer bags obviously meant for the meat that Jackie caught.’

There was still some fish and wild fowl in the freezer so Tom lifted them out and placed the new meat in their first then the other which was still alright to eat was placed on the top. The freezer was now nearly packed to capacity. Matty brought some fish up to be defrosted. The barramundi steaks would make them a nice dinner tomorrow he thought. Jenifer had been on the phone to her mother and father that afternoon she said that they were settling in and that both Irene and her friend Carol had got a job.

She told them of Matty’s plans to make a vineyard in the first acre of his land.’

They both said that Matty didn’t know anything about wine growing.

Jenifer assured them that he was getting help and that he was learning fast.’

Later that evening Matty rang his parents and told them of his first two days.

“If you need any more money Matthew just give us a call said his father.’

“There’s still a fair bit in that bank account you set up for us dad plus the grazing land will bring in money.’ Soon we will have enough money to cultivate another acre of land and grow a nice sauvignon and then a cabernet.’ There’s over fifty acres of land here dad.  If this takes off I may be able to go into wine growing as a full time business.’

“Go easy son, if it doesn’t work you could end up with nothing.’

“This is why I’m doing it acre by acre dad.’

“That’s sensible son.’

“How are things back home then?’

“Much the same, oh aye there was a fight in the street last night. Betty Kimber caught her man messing about wi Dot Wilson doon the street. Well there was hell on as you can well imagine. There was blood and snots aal over the place as John Kimber and Neville Wilson laid into one another.’

“You play wi fire and you get your fingers burnt.’ Anyway dad I’ll have to go I’ll ring you after we get the first vineyard ready to be planted.’

Alright then son take care and give our love to everyone.

“Will do,’ bye.’

Matty put down the phone then went into the dining room come library and picked up the wine growing book where he’d left a book mark and sat reading until after midnight. It was strange him going to bed as his parents were just getting up.

One thing was certain he was becoming more and more passionate about growing wine.

Irene and Carol returned with Tom they’d been over to the Flannery’s house to sit with Will and Liz. Marie Cooper was there too and taking a keen interest in Tom.

They seemed to get on well together and would be going to the same school in Kooringal. Matty seemed glad that his kids were finding new friends here in Australia and were adjusting very well to life out here. He wasn’t sure about Jenifer though. He wondered what she would be like once he started work at the factory and the kids were either at school or at work and she would be alone.’

He would have a word with Mick and ask him how Georgie filled her day in.’

He closed the book after placing the marker inside then went upstairs. Jenifer was already asleep when he undressed. Tonight seemed a little cooler than last night and he pulled the sheet over himself and closed his eyes.
