Bad Things

Of all the men mom had married, there wasn't a single one that could replace my dad. Except one.

11. Deja Vu?

Oh, not again. I looked over at the space next to me. How did I always end up in a stranger’s bed? I outstretched my arms when I sat up. There was a familiar scent radiating off of the pillowcase beside me. Harry’s cologne.

The first thing that came to my mind was: where am I? I get out of bed and button up a long-sleeved shirt. I walked out of the room and entered a large open space. I wasn’t sure where I was honestly. I mean, it was Harry’s place or that’s what I assumed.

“Your car is parked in the garage, if that’s what you’re wondering.” said Harry. He was in the kitchen, of course he was shirtless. I should expect this. I ran a hand through my hair, looking around the room. “Yes, this is my place.” He answered the silent question in my mind. How could he afford—He owns a company. Of course he’s rich.

“When did you become a billionaire?” I sat down on one of the barstools at the counter. Harry chuckled lightly. He poured me cup of coffee and handed it over to me. “I inherited the company.” I nodded and took a sip of my coffee.

Why was suddenly last night feeling like such a blur? Harry was my boss. I shouldn’t even be working for him, but there weren’t very many businesses that were accepting me. “Why did you hire me? We have… history.” I told him. He walked around and sat down on the barstool to my left after he poured himself a cup.

He let out a sigh. “I didn’t know I was going to hire you. Kathryn, since your mom found out about us, work had always been stressful. I couldn’t work at her company anymore; and if you’re curious about your mom, she’s getting married again. She sent me an invitation and wanted me to… bring a date. I asked Perrie. I figured that she would’ve sent you an invitation or something. And I assumed that you’d be bringing Liam. Yes, I know about you and he. I was at your graduation.”

I looked down at my mug as soon as he mentioned Liam’s name. I was slightly envious of seeing Perrie and Harry together at my mom’s wedding. I didn’t even know she had a new man in her life. “I can’t stay Harry. I have to go home. Liam—"

“The two of us had a talk about why you didn’t come home late. I told him nothing happened. We were just two old friends having a talk. Then it got late, you drank a few too many glasses of wine, and I couldn’t have you drive home. I didn’t tell him the truth Kat. It’s not my business. It’s yours.” He interrupted.

Harry was different. He seemed… mature. Though, I’m not sure if that had anything to do with him being 36-years-old. I didn’t even drink last night. Eventually, I’ll remember last night. Right now, I was focused on getting home. “Harry, I have to go to work.” I said.

“I’m your boss. Remember?” He asked with a smirk. I take that back. He’s not as different as I thought. I rolled my eyes and set my coffee down. I asked him about where my clothes were. He said he put them in the laundry. “Kathryn, what’s on your mind?”

“What are you talking about?"

“I know you. The look on your face is giving it away. I know you have something to say.”

I sighed. “Why… What am I really doing here Harry?"

“You shut me out four years ago. After you told your mom about what we did behind her back, you completely stopped talking to me. Do you have any idea how your mom felt when you shut her out too? The only reason why I knew about your graduation was because your friend Liam told me. I went to talk to you. I wanted to tell you about the divorce, except you were happy with Liam. I couldn’t ruin that day for you. Then I figured that if I got you hired at the company, we could reconnect again. Kathryn, you followed me here from the restaurant. You came here on your own will, so shouldn’t I be questioning you?” Harry had a point. It was all clear to me now.

“Kathryn, it’s going to bother you either way. It’s better to hear this from me than rather hearing this from someone else. The main reason is: you.” I should’ve expected this. I should’ve seen this coming. Yet, I didn’t. I stood from my seat, excusing myself from the table before walking out of the restaurant.

Harry followed me outside. “Kathryn, I know this is a lot to take in, especially—“ I interrupted him. I kissed his lips. I don’t know what came over me. The next thing I knew, I found myself following him in my car to his place.

“Did we… sleep together?” I asked him.

Harry grinned, “You really think that low of me? We didn’t sleep together. We both drove here. I offered you the extra room, but you passed out in my bed. I took off your clothes while you were sleeping. I didn’t want to wake you. Besides, you didn’t seem to be in the ‘sex’ kind of mood anyway. I wanted to respect that.” I nodded and finished my drink.

I said that I needed to take a shower. Harry told me my clothes would be done as soon as I’m finished. As soon as I got into the shower, I just let the water run all over my body. Why the sudden change? Harry seemed to want something more than just be a rich billionaire playboy.

He never mentioned any relationships. He seemed to be interested in Perrie. Though, I couldn’t picture them together. Just as soon as I was done with my shower, I dried off and saw my clothes were lying flat on Harry’s bed.

I changed into my clothes and grabbed my bag before heading out. The room was empty when I entered the main area. Harry must’ve gone out or something. I quickly wrote him a note before heading out. Whatever is happening between Harry and I, it feels… different.
