1. Part One: The Testing

                                                                                   Marina
"Take your time. Concentrate on the equation," I tell my 12 year old sister Sarah. She stares at her notebook for a minute then snaps her pencil in two angrily. "I can't have this memorized by tomorrow, Marina! I'm screwed," she snaps. I don't expect a sixth grader to be able to memorize a twelve grade equation in 16 hours, so I can't say I blame her for getting frustrated. "Why can't you just give me one of those contacts with the answers?" she whispers so our legal guardian, Gale Hawthorne, who is in the room next to ours, won't hear.
"Please Marina,"
"Fine." I say, pulling the small glass bottle out of my bag.
The "contact" she was referring to is a mechanically enhanced undetectable contact lens that hold the test answers. They're hard to get ahold of, which is why I make a killing off of selling them to people. I work a factory job, where they are mass produced, despite being illegal in every district, which makes them really easy for me to get ahold of.

Many years back, Panem, the ruins of North America now divided into 12 districts, revolted against the Capitol. As punishment, every year, each District offers two children between the ages of 12 and 18, one male one female, as a "Tribute". All 24 tributes are taken to the Capitol to train for a certain number of days before being  released into an arena to fight to the death until a lone victor remains. This pageant is known as the Hunger Games. Panem was temporarily ruled by President Coin, a female president who had dark intent. Coin died, but her successors refused to let the Hunger Games die.

The Tributes are chosen in a strange way. Instead of being reaped, children from grades 6th to 12th grade are given a standardized test that they have two hours to complete. The failing students are sent into the arena. The test gets harder every year. From identifying x to naming the digits of pi to memorizing the Quadratic Equation.

Last year, I passed my final test. I should have been relieved that I would never have to take that test again, but I wasn't. This was because my last year of testing, was Sarah's first year of testing. Sarah failing that test would be my worst nightmare come true.

I hand her the bottle. "Thanks. I swear I'll pay you back," she says grabbing the bottle. "Listen to me.When testing is over, destroy it as soon as possible."
"Okay," she tells me.
"You got lucky," I begin "That was my last one."

A 27 pound, fat, and ugly creature known as my sisters bulldog, Cookie, waddles its way towards Sarah's chair.

"Hi Baby," she says in a loving voice, picking him up.

I'm not particularly fond of Cookie, but since that dog is one of my sister's only friends and means the world to her,  I put up with him. That and because Cookie was originally my mothers. When mom died, just a year after our father, Cookie was all we had left of them. I wasn't old enough to be considered a legal guardian. Katniss told us via letter that her old friend, Gale Hawthorne, lived in our district and would take care of us when we told him that we were related to her.

"I'm going to the woods." Sarah says, putting on her black jacket and boots and grabbing her throwing knives.

"Okay. I love you," I tell her, planting a kiss on her forehead.

"I love you too."

Cookie glares at me before following Sarah out the door.

"Oh, what?!" I snap when her shadow leaves the doorway.
