I looked at my bonded eye to eye for the first time.  I saw everything there, the hurt, pain but also joy and the spark of interest in this new world.

“Your name is Shalatook?”  My bonded asked the old woman standing next to me.  She smiled,

“I go by many names.  Myst calls me Shalatook because of my position being a healer among the Familiars.  A Shalatook’s magic cannot be used for anything but healing.  Every kind of Magic has it’s own name, in time you will be able to recognize these type of Magics by sight and instinct.”  I already knew how to recognize the Magics and how to use their power against them.  I had grown up with my Mother Wolf teaching me everything I needed to know.  Since Valerie had never come for me, my own power had grown and matured without her.

I had learned many things on my own that I was supposed to learn with my Bonded.  Things that we needed trust for, our power was supposed to be growing together for the last two years, but since she’d been gone and untraceable, I had been on my own.  Even now my Bonded didn’t have a wizard to train her.

“Shalatook, I must ask you, will you please train Valerie?”  She did not seem surprised by my request though she did look somewhat sad.

“Myst and Valerie you should know that if I train you, I cannot train you in every aspect.  Because I am a Shalatook, my Magic can only be used for healing.  I can show you and try to guide you in other ways, but I can’t show you.”  I nodded once acknowledging what she was saying and turned to look at my bonded.

“I guess I have to start somewhere, so if you will take me as a student, I would appreciate it…what can I call you, besides Shalatook?”  Again, the Shalatook smiled,

            “You may call me Mackenzie.”
