1. Chapter 1

I sat on the hillside by the lake alone where the sun would always rise and fall. The breeze had a chill to it that sent shivers down my spine and gave me goosebumps. I never felt more at peace. I was new to this town, unsure of how I even ended up here. A little girl like me couldn't have been alone, could I? I don't have any memory before waking up here. I don't even remember my name. I took a deep breath and stuck my feet into the cool water of the lake. I started to sing a song I learned from a woman from the village. I liked to sing. It made me feel free. I haven't made any friends yet. They all avoided me, maybe because I'm just new. The adults are very nice to me and welcomed me and gave me shelter. I smile as a fish swims past my feet.

"Was that you singing?" a boy says as he looks down at me with another boy next to him. I stare up at him, blushing. "Umm...yeah." I said nervously.

"You have a beautiful voice. I'm Rogue, and this is Sting." He says, sitting down next to me.

"Nice to meet you." I say nervously, still blushing from them hearing my sing.

"Aww you don't have to be nervous! We're pretty cool to talk to." Sting said excitedly pointing and smiling at Rogue.

"Sorry, I'm just not used to talking to people. I'm new here." I said.

"Oh cool. What's your name?" Rogue asked me.

"Umm, I don't have a name." I said, staring at the water.

"Oh, well can we call you Melody?" Rogue said smiling.

"Melody..." I said smiling up at him.

"Oh, I know! How about Lyric?" Sting yelled out. Rogue hit him on top of the head. "Ow!"

"That's a terrible name Sting." Rogue yelled.

"Ok well you didn't have to hit me!" Sting yelled back.

The two of them started bickering back and forth as I looked at them and started giggling. Are they always like this?

I looked and smiled at him. "I like...Melody."

"I like that too!" Sting said. Rogue gives him a look and sighs.

"Melody it is. So Melody, now that you have a name, do you want to come get ice cream with us? We can show you all the great places here!" Rogue said standing up and holding out his hand for mine. Sting holds out his hand also. They both waited to hear my response. I smiled and grabbed both of their hands and ever since that day, we would all hang out everyday. I grown close to the both of them and we all became inseparable, until the day came where our village was ambushed and destroyed. That day still haunts my memories. Everyone I grew up with, the ones who took care of me and who I grown to love all perished. My best friends all dead.

"There she is." A man yelled as he pointed towards me. I looked up, my eyes burning from smoke and tears and stood frozen. My body started to tremble and a sharp pain in my chest formed.

"AHHH!" I screamed, clenching my chest as the pain shot through my whole body. Pebbles around my feet started bouncing off the ground.

"What the hell is happening!?" One man yelled, everyone stopped in their tracks and backed away from me.
"Why...why would you kill everyone I loved! Sting..Rogue..WHY!" I screamed, tears falling down my cheeks onto the shaking ground, pain still engulfing my body.

"Don't just stand there, grab her!" A man who looked like the leader yelled towards the other men. The men nodded and started running towards me. I screamed and felt something leave my body, a black cloud striking the men. I wanted them all dead but realized I would be worse than them. I stared at them with so much hate but knew that killing them would mean nothing. The darkness around rushes toward them as I tried to stop it but nothing I did worked. Before the leader could say anything, he collapses along with his men. I fall to my knees and cry, the black cloud covering me as if it was comforting me.

"They came for me. It's all my fault. It's my fault." I cried out as I knew no one could hear me. I look over at the men that I killed. "What have I done."

"This is indeed interesting." I hear a voice behind me. I turn around and look up at a man in a black cloak.

"Who are you?" I demand as I stand up slowly, feeling the pain in my chest increase and the darkness around me shield my body.

"I am a friend. I see you caused quite a mess." He said looking over at the men who still laid motionless.

"I didn't mean to..." I said, the darkness still engulfing me.

"Oh, but you did. They did destroy your home and friends, did they not?" The man grinned.

"Yes, but I don't understand why." I yelled.

The man stepped toward me and smirked. "That magic you wield is very powerful, and from what I see you don't know how to control it."

"Magic?" I gasped, staring at the darkness around me.

"Yes, magic. I can teach you how to control it so you don't hurt anyone anymore." He said, holding out his hand. A flash back came back to my mind of Rogue holding out his hand years ago. I shook my head and turned to look at my village that was burned to ashes.

"And what do you get out of it?" I ask.

"Oh, nothing at all. Just your help in the future is all I will need." He said with a serious look.

"What kind of help?" I ask.

"Nothing to concern you right now." He smiles.

I looked down at the men who I killed and looked at the cloaked man. If I can't control my magic, then how many more lives will I destroy? Everyone I loved, I have to put meaning to their lives. "Ok."

"That's what I wanted to hear. We'll started tomorrow. Follow me."

I follow him away from the place that was once my home. I look back at the hillside by the lake that was once my favorite place, now drenched in blood and ash. I feel my heart burn and turn away from the sight. "So what's your name anyway?" I ask.

"Zeref."
