Survive the night

I'm Ethan. I had a great life. A lot of friends by my side and playing rugby on our school team. But that's gone now. Something's changed.

3. Downtown

Rachel fell asleep on my bed and because we still had a break, I didn't wake her up. I slowly slipped out and looked back at her. If someone saw us while we were sleeping they would probably think something inappropriate, but that's not the case. We may look like that, but we are just really close. After mom passed away, dad started having problems with almost everything. He started drinking, so we had the best relationship siblings could have at our age. I think we grew up a lot sooner than others. We don't think about sleeping in one bed as something bad, or gross. We always shared a bed when she had a bad dream or was just simply scared. It became a habit or something. She rolled to the other side of my bed. I made my way down stairs and tried to make some breakfast for everyone, but considered the consequences it could have and got back into my room. I suddenly realized that she has some skills. She didn't trip on anything on the floor last night. I should really tidy it up here, my dirty clothes are all over the floor. On my desk are leftovers and you can't get to the window because of the fort of notebooks and who knows what, I don't know myself.

“Why are you looking all over your room with a look of disgust on your face?”Rachel said slowly with a questioning voice.

“Yeah, yeah just go already.” She got up and started walking to the door. “Can you make breakfast?” She glared at me and than smiled. I guess she really likes doing these kind of things like cooking and baking. Anyway, I guess I'm gonna go downtown too look around. The last time I've been there was about a year ago. I have no idea what it looks like today. I've heard they've built a new mall somewhere, but I can't remember where.

“Hey, R{Rachel}do you want to go to the new mall?” I asked hoping that she'll say yes. I assumed she didn't hear me so I went downstairs and woke up dad. I probably forgot to say that he's okay now, not an addict.

“Hey dad, wake up Rachel's making breakfast.” I said with a soft voice. He had a rough day yesterday.

“What time is it?” he asked with a still sleepy voice, as he was rubbing his eyes.

“We overslept a little bit. It's 9 o'clock.” I said slowly because I knew what was going to happen. He sat up on the bed and looked at me wide eyed “What?”

“Okay calm down it's a free day.”

After he calmed down we went into the kitchen Rachel was finishing the breakfast. She turned towards us and we were kinda shocked to see her eyes all puffy.

“Why the hell are you crying?” I asked in a whispering voice with concern in my eyes.

“You want to go out.” Are you serious? She was crying because of this, I swear women are the biggest mystery of the world.

“Were you seriously crying because of that??” I literally shouted at her with disbelief. “Look you don't have to make such a big deal out of it, okay” I softened a little as she stiffened. She nodded looking down at the floor.

“Group hug!” said dad with his arms wide open and a big smile on his lips. He always did this when there was a fight between us. The length of it depended on how serious the situation was. After a little one the hug lasted for about 10 seconds. This lasted for about a minute or two. It started to get really awkward so I tried to pull away, but my precious sister wouldn't let me.

“So, uhm... I'm kinda hungry so if you don't want me to starve to death you should let go of me.” I said with a serious tone because my stomach began to growl and hurt at the same time. Finally both of them let go and we all sat down at the table.

“What's for breakfast?”asked dad.

“Can't you see?” answered Rachel and I've never been more proud of my sister. Dad tried to think of a comeback, but he couldn't. He was left speechless after my little sister asked him a simple question. I don't know which emotion was bigger, the disappointment in dad or that my sister turned into something awesome. After he gave up we ate our breakfast and were ready to head out. I asked dad if he wanted to come with us, but he refused saying that he had some work to do. We live pretty close to the city center so we took a walk. When we arrived there were just few people on the street and even fewer in the stores, what made it more comfortable for me. When we reached the end of the main street I could see the new mall, but that wasn't what caught my attention. There were police cars around a slightly taller building and people were looking up. I looked up at the top of the building and there was a girl standing at the edge. I looked around and saw that no one was trying to help her they were just waiting until she jumped, the police saved her and they all could go home and tell their kids and friends what they've seen. It disgusted me. Someone will record it for sure and it will be in the news tomorrow. I ran towards the police tape crawled under it, and yanked a loudhailer from an officers hand.

“What on Earth are you doing?” I asked with anger in recognized her immediately. She was the quiet one that was bullied all the time.”I'm gonna go up there and talk to you, okay? Promise me that you won't get up until I get up.” She nodded and I felt kinda relieved. The policemen in our town aren't exactly what you would describe as intelligent so they just watched me as I finished talking to her. I returned the loudhailer and made my way on the roof. I found her sitting and crying by the door. I sat down next to her and hugged her with one arm.

“What's your name?” I asked with soft voice.

“Abby.” she answered with a cracking voice filled with sobs.

“Well, Abby do you want to come with me and talk somewhere else? It's kinda chilly out here.” I stood up and held out a hand for her. She took it and I helped her up. I asked my sister to stay here for a while longer and we went home.

So, I don't know if you like this story, but I'm gonna continue writing it anyway. You can always tell me what you think about it.
