9. One Year Later: November 1806

So as you could imagine, the last year has been quite hectic. One by one our sons have left the house going on to their own wonderful things. But every night I still bring supper to Alexander's office, and place it by his desk, only to remain uneaten and cold.  So today, as I brought him his soup, I pulled over a chair, and told him I would be back. I put the children to bed, and about a half an hour later I came back. Like always, the plate remained untouched. It was time for a well deserved chat.

"Honey, are you alright? You haven't been eating much lately." I began.

"Yeah..." He mumbled.

"Look me in the eyes." I grasped his shoulder, and he sat up.

"Listen. I love that you write. But sometimes, you've just got to take a break. Now, I just made this nice warm soup, and you'll catch cold along with it if you don't eat it."

"I'm good."

"I swear you mind has been wandering too much. Come back to the real world. Now, do you know what's next week?"

"Uhhhhh....."

"Your daughter's birthday!" I said. I couldn't believe he didn't know.

"Don't go through life so worried about defending yourself that you forget the important things." And with that, I gave him a quick kiss on the forehead and walked away.
