The Histories of the Nilites

In a universe first-glance that seems like ours, the beginning is nowhere the same. The myths of the beginning of this world start with Nihl, primordial darkness and chaos, and how things go from there. (OKAY, SO THESE PEOPLE DO NOT NOT NOT HAVE INCEST DO NOT BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE DNA, OKAY NO DNA, PRIMORDIAL MIST FLOWS THROUGH THEIR BODIES. THEY ARE CONDENSED PRIMORDIAL MIST. NO INCEST. PLEASE NOTE: NO INCEST. THOUGH SOME CHARACTERS ARE STATED TO HAVE DONE HANKY-PANKY, IT IS NOT INCEST, OKAY NONONONONONO INCEST.)

4. The Five Children of Mortem and Malum

The second generation Nihlas were much more impatient that their parents and uncle, and they began creating life at once.

Messor, though, could not convince neither Mortem nor Malum to help him create life, so he never did.

Mortem and Malum, being impatient, created many lifeforms.

The first they created was Vitae, life. She was conceived mainly from Death, wanting to create something opposite himself, something to give. He achieved this goal, and Vitae is the incarnation of life and living things, mortals, plants, animals, fungi, bacteria: everything.

The second child of Mortem and Malum was Noctem, the night. Though Noctem was very similar to his ancestor, Stygian, he was not completely like him. While Stygian is the darkness of the universe, able to change, Noctem is a created darkness, from snuffing out a source of light. He is the darkness of a room after turning off the light, or blowing out a candle, he is the darkness of a hollow tree. Noctem is an artificial darkness, Stygian is the constant darkness, the nighttime darkness, only moved or changed by light or life.

The third child of Mortem and Malum was Somnum. Mortem once speculated to Malum that there could not be a permanent form of Death, that he would not allow it. Malum reasoned with him that once something is dead, its soul has been used up. But, Mortem said, What if I could create an artificial Death. Something short, but constant, always needed. Therefore, Somnum was created, to be a temporary Death throughout life. Somnum became temporary Death, or dreamless sleep. [It is said that when one goes into a dreamless sleep, the remnants of Nihl can be seen.]

After the creation of Somnum, the Nihlas were able to sleep. One day, Malum said to Mortem, I found sleep a great thing. I was not ill, and could not feel the sicknesses churning inside me. There has to be a different way to obtain this feeling. Mortem, feeling sorry for Malum, proposed to her that they create a being capable of curing her. Malum, excited about this proposition, began working, thinking of ways to fix sickness. Malum was always sick, you see, and was constantly tired, and could hardly do anything, for she was always coming down several illnesses of varying degrees, though she could never die from these illnesses. She was eager to rid of them.

The fourth child of Mortem and Malum was created in a fervor of good intentions. The product, though, was the thing they wanted though. Instead of creating a being to fix ailments, Mortem and Malum created Dolor, the embodiment of Malum’s pain. While Malum was a sickly Nihl, Dolor was energized, causing instant physical harm to all., mostly not meaning to. Heartbroken, Malum nearly gave up on finding a cureall. Mortem, though, determined to find a way to ease Malum’s pain, convinced her to try once more.

The fifth creation of Mortem and Malum was separate from the rest of their children, born a few hundred years after them, because it took that long for Mortem to convince Malum to try once more, and for Malum to decide which part of her being to sacrifice, how much of it, too. She didn’t want to make a mistake like last time, and cause more harm. So, the fifth being became Curare, healing. Curare is not a cure, though, but is a slow recovery at times. She was the balance of Dolor, an ender of his destruction. Or most of it.

From here, many Nihlas are created. We will begin with a child of Vitae and Noctem..
