10. Marriage Can Wait

Edward followed the scent of the blood. “Where are you going?” Alice called out after her brother. Edward didn’t answer her and kept running. It was the night of April 2, 1990. He and his family were out on a hunt when he had smelt blood. He was faster than his family. He had found the girl first. Though his family eventually caught up with him, except Jasper couldn’t control himself. Before any of them tried to stop him, he lunged at the girl’s neck. Of course, it took Edward and Emmett to pull their brother away from the girl. Three days they waited until the girl finally woke. Edward stayed a small distance from her. She found her crying to be a bit odd to until Carlisle confirmed that it was her gift. He could read her mind and sense that she was confused. She had every right to be. Though as he stood there while his family were observing her ‘strangeness,’ he found her to be very… beautiful. He was quite taken with her. He had never seen anyone so beautiful before.

. . .

“Carlisle and I need to talk with you two alone.” said Esme. Nine years since Valerie’s transformation, and to Edward, living with Valerie was a pain. He had to share his room with a newbie, which he didn’t particularly like. He had no say in the matter. Edward and Valerie followed their parents out the door. It was then Esme had said aloud that he and Valerie should get married. Carlisle did not add anything to his wife’s statement. Both Valerie and Edward were shocked to hear this news, especially Edward. “Carlisle, can’t we reason this out with the others?”

Of course the marriage never happened between Valerie and Edward. The two of them had sought after their own desired love interests—Valerie after Jacob and Edward after Bella. Though a love between he and Bella could’ve never lasted because she was a human. He had refused to turn her into a vampire. Now, Bella had carried on to live her human life. It was better for the both of them to remain the way their lives were. Valerie and Jacob were together, but neither were sure if the relationship between a vampire and a werewolf could last. It was frowned upon, especially by the other members of the Cullen family (except for Rosalie and Jasper who were accepting of the relationship between the two individuals). Though as much as Jacob would continue to shift to slow down the aging process, he’d have to eventually age. Valerie wouldn’t; and the two of them could never have any children.

“What’s the point of us being together Valerie? You love Jacob, and everyone knows it.” said Edward. Finally he turned to face her. Valerie stood silently. She had a feeling she was going to have to listen to his long drawn out speech about her current relationship with Jacob, except to her surprise, Edward didn’t bother to continue on. “Edward, this choice wasn’t based on Carlisle and Esme’s choice. The choice to marry you is my own choice. I love you. I know I always have. As much as I wanted to be with Jacob—“

“You and Jacob deserve to be together. You deserve to be happy Val and—“

“Don’t you get it Edward? I am much more happier with you than I have been in a long time. It’s not because you were the one who turned me. You gave me a second chance at life instead of leaving me to die. I wouldn’t have been here if it weren’t for you or met my long lost brother, Elijah.” Valerie approached him slowly and took his hand in hers. She caressed his hand softly, gazing up into his topaz colored eyes. Edward didn’t have to hear how she felt about him. He could read her mind instantly, knowing that she was telling him the truth. He brought up the mention of her brother, Elijah. “At least take the time to get to know him before you start judging him Edward.” Edward nodded slowly and reached up with one hand to touch her cheek. He could feel the warmth radiating off her skin. It had been a warmth that Valerie had been longing for. The kind of warm she felt for Edward was different than that of the warmth she felt with Jacob. “In case you were wondering about the answer to your question,” he paused. “I will marry you, soon.”
