14. Epilogue

The ceremony was beautiful. Alice had done such a fantastic job. Leah and Elijah were expecting twins. They have been married for five years now. They had two other children—the boy was four and the girl was two. The twins would be born later this year. I couldn’t have been more happy for them. Emmett and Rosalie moved back into the house. I moved to the old room since Edward, Bella, and Renesmee were living in the cottage that had been given to them by Carlisle and Esme. Renesmee was named after both Bella’s mom Renee and Edward’s, Esme. She looked to be about 15 years old now, but she was still continuing to grow at a fast rate. Jacob had imprinted on her, which I’m glad that he had found someone to love.

Also since Renesmee’s birth, Bella had learned the ways of being a vampire. Like the others, except myself, Bella drank animal blood. The ceremony Alice had set up was for Esme and Carlisle to celebrate their wedding anniversary. I was standing on the balcony that overlooked the incredibly decorated backyard. “You ready?” asked Edward. I looked over at him, seeing that he was wearing a suit.

In these last five years, Edward had married Bella, Jacob and Renesmee were together (not officially), Leah and Elijah are living together, and the rest of my family are happy with their loved ones. I, on the other hand, was still single and living at home. I can’t remember how many times I’ve repeated high school and college since I became a vampire. I’d say that the graduation caps the five of us have accumulated was enough to cover one wall in our house. As much as I love my family, it all started to feel empty to me. I kept thinking about my own family—my human family. My sisters were in New York, who came to Forks with their families to attend Elijah’s wedding. They were surprised to see me since their reaction had been the same as Elijah’s.

What would’ve happened if I was human? What would’ve happened if I was left to die? The reason why I’m still alive was because of Edward. I felt like I owed my life to him. Though it hurts me a bit to see that both he and Jacob were finally happy. “Hey, the wedding’s about to start.” Alice called out to us. “Val, something wrong?” Edward knew what I was thinking. I didn’t have to explain to him what I was feeling. He reached out and touched my cheek before pulling me into a hug. I tried to hold back from crying but even the tears couldn’t be stopped from flowing. I hugged him back. “Bye.” I whispered, loud enough for Alice to hear as well. I pulled away looking at them both and headed inside.

Carlisle and Esme were going to wonder where I’ve gone, but they would immediately know. Alice and Edward would have it written across their faces. Rosalie and Jasper would try to stop me. Emmett would block the door. Though it’d already be too late. I left my car for Renesmee to use when she learned how to drive. I was going to miss my niece. When I exited the house, Renesmee was there. “Aunt Val, where are you going?” She had grown so tall. I couldn’t hide anything from her, even if I wanted to. She had an ability like the rest of us. I didn’t know what to say to her or how to tell her. “You can’t leave us.” She wrapped her arms around me. I hugged her tightly. Renesmee was the sweetest teenager I’ve ever met. Often times, she would ask me to play with her when she was growing up. She related to me the best because she was half-human.

“Honey, I have to go.” I whispered.

“Jake won’t let you.” While hugging her, Jacob was standing behind her. I pulled away when he walked up to me. He was the last person I had to face before leaving. He told me not to go. I could see that everyone from the pack was in on it too. I sighed and looked down. “I’m not going to fight you Jake or the pack either. Let me go.” I looked into his brown eyes.

“Nessie’s right. I won’t let you leave, not again.”

“It’s better this way.”

“Your family’s here. The Cullens, Elijah, me.” As grateful as I was for him to tell me all of this, I wasn’t sure about where I belonged anymore. I told him that it wasn’t enough to get me to stay. For a long time, Forks just didn’t feel like home to me anymore. It reminded me too much of my parents and the life that I had here with them. “Valerie, are you leaving honey?” I heard Esme’s voice behind me. I was so grateful for everything that she had done for me by being the best maternal figure I’ve had in my life since losing my parents. I turned around, only to see that everyone was there. “Yes Esme. I can’t stay in Forks.” I said. The sentence was harder to say out loud because my voice cracked.

“Let me go with you.” Edward spoke up. Everyone was shocked, even Jacob. What? “Valerie, the times you’ve spent leaving us here without a word, you ever considered someone should join you?”

“Edward, you can’t. You have a 15-year-old daughter that you can’t leave Bella alone with.”

“Renesmee has everyone to keep an eye on her. Bella has all the help she can get. Besides, I’m more worried about you.” I knew what Edward really meant. I knew him extremely well. I nodded and looked down. He suggested to take his car. I almost refused, but then again, Edward was going to know before I opened my mouth. We said our goodbyes to everyone, got in his car, and drove away.
