82. Peel Back the Skin

“Ask me,” Jinmi said, “You’ve been wondering this long.”

She weighed nothing, so he carried her on his back most of the way, her petals a veil for him to march through.

“Where were you all this time?” she didn’t bother say that he didn’t have to answer.  There’s a point where after that, there’s nothing you can do to cause offence.  After that, it’s a love about looking under your skin because they want all of you, and not being disgusted to watch your heart throb and beat.

“I fell in love,” he started, “With a God named Samhain, who had such bad dreams about torture and death and loss, and he was so lonely I took pity on him, and promised to stay.  I fell so in love, and forgot you, so I stayed and slept by his side.  I became a sleeping mortal, and that was all.  He told me to leave him, because he met you in a dream, and you asked him to let you go.  So I found you, with the help of his guardian angel, and now we’re here.”

She spoke through a smile, he could hear it, “I know Samhain.”

    “You do?”

“He was one of the Gods who gave me control over nature.  Eros loved him too, just like that.”

    “Eros… I-”

“Please,” she stopped him, “I’ve lived with his eyes staring at me for so long, his soul his on my shoulders now, and I don’t care if you killed him or not.”

Jinmi stopped walking, and set her down, “And you never told me about being a Goddess?”

She looked away, shame still lurking under her broken flesh, “I didn’t want you to treasure me.  I liked when we could play, when we were free to do what we wanted in Mavros.  Appalla saw me as a gift and you… You never saw me that way, just as someone you loved.  I think - and I know it’s selfish - but I think that I needed that.”

“You’re still a treasure, either way,” he took her hand, and she no longer pulled away, but let them be in this moment.  No longer children.  Her body was mismatched, his mind in three.  But they loved each other, and that was enough, “And you still glow the same.”

“You’re remarkable, Jinmi, and I’m so glad that you came back for me, because I couldn’t live without you.”

“I don’t know anyone like you, Daphne, how could I go on?”

She laughed, and they walked until she no longer could, “And this spell, it doesn’t… Change - well, this?”

“I don’t know.  But this is something I have to do anyway.  For him.”

She smiled, her heart full of his second-hand light, and his second-hand hope, “I understand.”
