7. The Reveal

Elena remembered waking up the next morning in the motel to only see the note Stefan had left her. A part of her was wishing that she could’ve seen him before he left. It had been two years since then. Though her experience was different from his. About one year ago, she was tortured by the one person who enjoyed it the most, Katherine. She could remember all the pain she had endured in order for her humanity to come back, which it didn’t. Elena was now standing outside of her old house. She had grown up in that very house with her parents and younger brother, Jeremy. She walked up to the door and rang the doorbell. There wasn’t anyone she wanted to visit more than her own family. She honestly wasn’t sure if her parents were out of the house or if Jeremy was away at college. She didn’t have their number. She had tossed away her phone years ago when she made the move to New York.

The door opened and a young man stood before her. His brown eyes looked back at her, both confused and surprised. “Elena?” Jeremy couldn’t believe his eyes. His sister was back home. He hadn’t seen her in so long that he had almost forgotten what she looked like. “Mom! Dad! Elena’s home!” He called out behind him. Elena could hear the sound of footsteps headed towards the door, not only were their parents at the door but Aunt Jenna as well. Elena stood awkwardly outside her house. She had to be invited into her own home. “Elena, come in hon.” said Miranda. Tears were brought to Elena’s eyes. She entered the home and embraced her parents in a warm hug. They didn’t know what she was, or that’s what she had assumed. She felt the need to keep her vampirism a secret.

Elena settled into her own room and sighed at her human memories. “Glad to have you back.” She heard a voice and turned to see Matt. He was leaning against her door frame with his arms crossed. Elena wasn’t sure if he would be interested in giving her a hug. “Are you back to normal?” asked he.

“For the most part, yes.” she answered. “How is Damon?” It was at this very moment that Matt knew the old Elena was back. When he didn’t answer her, Elena knew something was wrong. She could sense that Matt was keeping something from her. She didn’t dare to ask him, instead she decided to go and see Damon for herself. She did wrap her arms around him. “I missed you Matt.” She felt his arms wrap around her to return the hug. It was a tight hug, which Elena really needed. She was a bit relieved that Matt had come to see her if she was feeling alright. She pulled away and kissed his cheek with a smile. “Let’s catch up sometime.” Matt nodded in agreement before Elena headed out. She took her parents’ car to the Salvatore Boarding house. She remembered the last time she was at the Salvatore Boarding house. It was one year ago when she was held up in the basement with Katherine. Those unpleasant memories swam through her mind. As much as she tried to shut them out, she couldn’t. Then there were the memories when she got her humanity back.

After being tortured by Katherine, Elena had fled to New Orleans and crossed paths with Elijah Mikaelson, who eventually did help her turn her humanity switch back on. Elena parked the car in front of the house and walked up to the front door. She rang the bell and waited a minute or two before the door opened. “Hello Damon.” Damon stood before her, blue eyes shining in the afternoon light. Elena could tell how surprised he was to see her on his door step. “I’m sorry for not calling, but—“ Her sentence was cut short when she saw a woman wearing one of his shirts behind him. She should’ve called. Damon started to open his mouth to speak. Elena shook her head. They broke up. It was no big deal. She turned away and started to head towards the car. Damon sped to her and stood before her. “Elena,”

“I get it Damon. You couldn’t wait.” Elena got into the car and backed out before driving down the main street. She drove home, only surprised to see that Matt’s truck was still parked in front of the house. Matt was just leaving when Elena arrived. He saw that she had been crying and asked her what was wrong. Elena stayed silent, which was the cue for Matt to wrap his arms around her. She cried into his shoulder. Matt couldn’t tell Elena that she deserved better. He knew how happy she was with Damon. It upset him that Elena was hurt. “Don’t leave me Matt.” said she. Elena had pulled away and looked up into his eyes.

“I don’t know if your parents—“

“We’ve been friends forever Matt. They’ll understand.” Elena interrupted. She grabbed Matt’s hand and led him back inside the house upstairs to her room. She closed the door and told him that she’ll take a quick shower. When she was done with her shower, she had changed and got into bed. Matt joined her and wrapped an arm around her. He didn’t bother to ask if she wanted to talk about what happened when she visited Damon. He knew that she wasn’t in the mood to talk about it tonight. Instead, he just held her close.

The next morning, Elena awoke and found herself lying on Matt’s chest. She glanced up to see that he was still asleep. She slipped out of bed and headed downstairs. Her parents, Jeremy, and Aunt Jenna were gathered at the table. Miranda was just finishing up with breakfast when Elena arrived. “Good morning honey.” Her mom smiled. Elena smiled, greeting her mom in the same manner. She joined her Aunt Jenna and Jeremy at the table as breakfast served. Grayson asked about Matt. Elena replied to her dad that Matt was still asleep. As she at her breakfast, she only thought about what her family would say if they were to find out that their daughter was a vampire. She knew about the Gilbert history from the stories Stefan has told her. “Elena, is there something on your mind?” Aunt Jenna turned towards her niece. Matt had just come downstairs before Elena replied to her Aunt’s question. Elena exchanged glances with him, only knowing by the look in his eyes that she may regret telling them the truth.

“Mom, Dad, Aunt Jenna, Jeremy… I’m a vampire.”
