He says that that he had surgery then, is that correct?

“Yes,’ that right.’

Well the fall that you husband sustained has regulated his heart. It is now beating as normal as any healthy man.’

“So he isn’t going to die?’

“Not for at least fifty years Mrs Shaw.’

“Can I see him?’

“Yes,’ but only for a few minutes; he is still groggy from the anaesthesia.

Ruby went through to a ward with George then went behind a screen that was placed all around his bed. His broken leg was now in plaster and there was a cage inside the bed clothes preventing them from touching the still damp plaster cast.

“Hi Richard said Ruby everything is going to be fine. The doctors say that the operation was a success.

That’s good said Richard, his eyes still sleepy from the operation.

“Can I get you anything; I have only got a few minutes with you.’

“Yes,’ a cold pint of beer would go down nice right now.’

“Well,’ I have the next best thing.’

Ruby poured out a little water into a beaker and held it to his lips and he moistened them then took a sip.’

“At least I won’t have been drinking when I slobber all over you.’

Ruby leaned across and kissed him then told him that she would be back later.

“I love you Ruby.’

“I love you too darling, see you later; try and get some sleep.’

“Don’t worry mate I will bring Ruby tonight again for you. I’m off to get that six point stag now.’

“Thanks a lot mate.’

“Thank you; had you not fallen out of that tree I wouldn’t be getting any venison.’

Ruby lifted her hand to her lips and blew him a kiss as she left the ward.

Ruby rang Richard’s parents to tell them what had happened and the news about his heart condition.

It took Richard three months of intensive physiotherapy before he was able to walk again. He walked out the hospital without a stick. He said he would never walk with a stick. During his stay in hospital George had been giving Ruby driving lessons she passed her test two days before Richard was released from hospital and she came to pick him up in his car. Richard couldn’t believe it as she pulled up and came to a halt at the doors as the nurse wheeled him out and he was able to get in the passenger seat.

“That was a surprise.’

“Was it; well I’ve got a bigger surprise than that.’

“Come on then tell me; what have you done;’ you haven’t gone and redecorated the house have you.’

“Changed the garden somewhat?’

“What then don’t keep me in suspense?’

“You’re going to be a daddy.’

“What did you say, when, how come?’

“Well if my dates are correct it will be around September.’
