When George answered she told quickly him what had happened and he said to wait for him until he arrived. “It will take five minutes Ruby.’ George put down the phone then shot out of the house with a barber jacket and hat on.

He put the key in the ignition and took off the hand brake the let out the clutch and away he went. George wasn’t worried about the speed limit here on the country roads and was doing in excess of 90 mph.

When he pulled up outside the cottage he got out of the jeep then went around the back where Ruby was waiting. She and George ran through the woods not stopping until they saw Richard he was still hobbling towards them.

George Shotton was an ex- SAS soldier. Ruby carried his rifle as George picked Richard up and carried him over his shoulders. You’ve put a bit of weight on since you got married Richard; it must be your wife’s good cooking.’

I’ve shot a six pointer George it’s in the woods about 3 miles back; can you get it for me before the foxes get to it mate?’

“Not problem my friend. I’ll even skin the bloody thing and chop it up for you.’

“Thanks George just help yourself to what ever you want George.’

“Oh I will don’t you worry about that.’ but lets get you to the hospital first.’

That leg doesn’t look too clever but you will live he laughed.’

When they got back to the Jeep George laid Richard down in the back then shouted “Hang onto your hats this is going to be a bumpy ride.’ as Ruby jumped in and they took off at speed. George never eased up as he took the bends like a pro racing driver. He drove to Hemlington Row the oldest hospital in Crook.

Driving right up to the doors Ruby ran in and called for assistance.

Two porters brought out a trolley and Richard was placed on it straight away.

The Nurses cut the ropes holding the branches and were about to cut his trousers off.

“Hold it said Richard, you’re not cutting my best hunting fatigues. “ I’ll ease them down. He undid his belt then gritted his teeth as he lifted up his bottom then eased the trousers down as far as he could. The nurses then slid them over his feet. The bones of his broken leg were sticking up through the skin.

“Well you’ve definitely broken your leg Mr Shaw haven’t you said the doctor who came to examine him.’

“I hurt my shoulder too said Richard.

“Right lets get that jumper off you and we’ll take you down for x-ray.’

Ruby took the doctor to one side and told him about Richard’s heart condition.

The doctor returned to the trolley that Richard was on then sounded his heart. “You’ve got a bit of hypertension there Mr Shaw which is expected after your fall.’ “We are going to give you something to bring your blood pressure down a little. A canola was fitted in his arm and then some bloods taken. They also gave Richard and ECG to check to see if his heart was working properly then he was taken straight down to x-ray.

Once the extent of his injuries were assessed Richard was taken into surgery where he under went a five hour operation to repair his shattered tibia and fibula. Ruby was told that the operation was a success but Richard would need to use a walking stick for the rest of his life.

“What about my husband’s heart?’

“Believe this or not but what ever he did in that fall has rectified his heart condition.’ His heart is stronger than most men of his age.’

“Are you sure of that?’

“One hundred percent Mr Gonzalez one of the top cardiologists in the country has studied your husbands case notes when he had Arrhythmia as a five year old.’
