Looking down he saw the stag, big and proud, a young buck about a year old and three does followed behind. He looked around warily before venturing to the spot they had been to the day before. Richard lowered the rifle silently then took aim.

He exhaled slowly as his finger hovered over the trigger then looking through the sight he had a perfect head shot. He squeezed the trigger and the gun exploded. Richard didn’t have time to see if he’d hit the deer because the recoil from the rifle sent him flying in a mass of flailing arms and legs to the ground below. Richard hit the ground with an almighty thud. He lost consciousness for a few seconds as his head hit the ground. When he came around he knew that his leg was broken and his right shoulder was dislocated. He cried out in pain as he tried to get to his feet. He was three miles from the cottage with no hope of contacting anyone. He looked around and saw the deer that he’d shot. It lay still as the bullet had killed it instantly. Richard looked around he then dragged himself over to a near by tree then tied a piece of rope to it then around his dislocated shoulder he than put a stick in his mouth and bit down on it then counted to three before jerking the rope and his shoulder popped back in. The pain registered in his brain and he yelped out in agony. He now had to set his leg he had broken at the tibia and his right knee was twisted badly. Dragging himself on his bottom he found two branches. He took out his knife that he used to skin and clean the animals he shot and used it to take off the twigs so that he was left with two straightened poles. he then fixed them to either side of his broken leg with the rope he’d used to put his shoulder back in with. He cut several lengths then secured each piece tightly. Then using the tree hauled himself up into a standing position. He hopped on his good leg until he found another long branch that he could fashion into a kind of crutch.

It took him all of thirty minutes to make but when it was done he was able to support his weight upon it. His knee was swelling up badly now and the pain was getting worse. He picked up his rifle using the end of the crutch and slung it over his good shoulder. He knew he had to get back to the cottage under his own steam before Ruby went to work. He hobbled along keeping his weight off the injured leg. Every hundred yards he found he had to stop. His heart was racing and he was out of breath.

It took him over an hour to walk a mile. Richard looked at his watch it was now twenty minutes to seven he knew he wouldn’t catch Ruby before she left for work.

He pushed on until he tripped over and cried out again in agony. He cursed himself for climbing the tree in the first place. Again he got up and carried on his will power kept him going as he passed the stream. He knew that he wasn’t far from the cottage now. His head was sore and so were his neck and his shoulder which ached like hell. He couldn’t feel his leg at all but he kept moving. He knew if he stopped he would not be able to move.

Then he heard a familiar voice; it was Ruby she had obviously wondered why he hadn’t returned and had come looking for him.

“Ruby I’m over here he shouted.’

After five minutes Ruby spotted her husband hobbling and ran to help him.

“Are you alright darling, what on earth happened?’

“I fell out of a tree, my leg is broken, and I’ve put my shoulder out. Can you run back and ring George Shotton and tell him what’s happened he will drive me to the local hospital. “Will you be alright I f I leave you.’

I’ll be fine darling; just be careful you don’t fall.’

Ruby moved quickly through the woods she was light on her feet and didn’t stop until she reached the cottage. She didn’t have time to remove her boots so she just went inside found the phone book and dialled George’s number.
