“Does that answer your question?’

“Yes it does, I am pleased that you can make him happy; Richard deserves a little happiness I his life after what he has been through.’

“I’m sorry what do you mean?’

Richard was born with a weakness in his heart didn’t he tell you?’ You poor girl I thought you knew.’ Have you not seen the scar on the left side of his chest?’

“No I haven’t. Ruby was crying now and Bronwyn pulled her to her breast and stroked her hair. “What is wrong with him she sobbed?’

“The doctors operated on him when he was only five years old they told me that if he took things easy and didn’t exert himself too much he could live thirty years or more. He’s twenty seven now; he may only have a few years left to live. “You must never tell him what I have told you do you understand?’

Yes I do, but couldn’t the doctors be wrong Mrs Shaw?’ I mean technology has changed so much they may be able to fix his heart.’

“I read the papers and listen to the radio in the hope that some breakthrough might happen and that Richard might be selected for pioneering surgery one day.’

“I would understand if after what you have just heard you chose not to marry my son.’

But if you do decide to marry Richard; I know that you will make the remaining years of his life a happy one.’

Just then Richard appeared in the doorway he looked at his mother then at Ruby before speaking.’ “You told her didn’t you mother?’

“Yes,’ I thought it only right that she should know Richard.’ I’m sorry son.’

“It’s alright mother, I would not want someone to marry me out of pity.’

“Richard please; I’m sorry; please forgive me.’

“Ruby, pack your things,’ we’re leaving.’

“You cannot leave without eating breakfast first son; you know what the doctor said about getting stressed.’

Richard turned then went back up stairs Ruby followed him and when he got to his room she went in with him and closed the door. Richard was breathing hard and Ruby tried to calm him down.

“Richard please listen to me, when I said that I loved you I meant every word.’

“Knowing what I know now I love you still.’ I wish I had answered your question last night Richard; I thought that it wouldn’t be fair to hold a drunken man to a promise.’

“If you think that I would marry you out of pity then you are mistaken. “Don’t throw what we have away Richard; let us make the most of what we have.’ Doctors have been wrong before.’ You may have many, many years ahead of you; happy years Richard that we can share together.’ “Now ask me the question.’

Richard looked at her then turned away; I can’t Ruby, I cannot ask you after all that you now know about me; it is just not fair.’

“Alright you answer me this Richard Shaw; I love you with all my heart; I’ve loved you from the first moment when you asked me about William Blake. There was something that was meant to be between us then Richard. So will you make me the happiest girl in the world and marry me?’

“Are you sure this is what you want Ruby.’

“I’ve never been more certain in my whole life Richard.’ I want to be with you.’

“Alright then I will marry you.’

Ruby ran to him and they kissed over and over she clung to him and him to her. after which she led him by the hand and they went back down stairs together.’

“Mother you better buy yourself a new hat; I’m getting married.’
