When three thirty sounded on the grandfather clock, Richard showed them to the room where they would be sleeping. Ruby and her mother would be sharing a bed together. There were four bedrooms in the house the biggest of which was given to Gareth because they had to get a wooden frame made from oak logs to take his twenty stone bulk and a specially made mattress. Three huge pillows supported his twenty four inch neck. One of his biceps was nearly as big as Ruby’s waist.

His huge shoulders just swallowed up the room. Ruby kissed Richard goodnight as he brought their cases up.

He so wanted her in his bed but it was not protocol in his mothers house whilst they we not married.’

At seven o’clock that morning they were woken by the colliery band and the choir of Merthyr Tydfil singing “Land of My Father’s.’ The whole street stood outside Dfan and Bronwyn’s house as they all came to the door in dressing gowns to listen to the sweet voices as they sang in harmony. Betty had to put on a head scarf because she had pipe cleaners in her hair. Ruby had gone to sleep with rollers in and it was both embarrassing for both women as they stood and listened to the beautiful voices. The whole street all joined in singing in Welsh. It was beautiful. When they were finished they all walked away to their houses.’

“What a beautiful gesture said Ruby as she stood with Richard. “ I told you we Welsh folk were good at singing.’

“I would love to be woken up with the sound of that choir singing every morning said Bronwyn.’ Who then turned down the passage and entered the scullery to make breakfast?’

“Can we help said Betty?’

“No, no, you go and get yourselves ready and we will give you a shout when Breakfast is ready. Bronwyn placed about three pounds of bacon in the oven and three dozen eggs were scrambled. She cut three freshly baked cobs and buttered them whilst stirring a huge pot of oats.

When they all sat down for breakfast Gareth sat on a hand made thrown like seat whilst his mother scooped out oats onto a massive bowl.

“Excuse our Gareth wont you said Bronwyn, but he is in training and needs a lot of food.’

Nearly a full jar of honey was poured onto his oatmeal and he stirred it in then set about it like a man possessed. “I’ve hung twelve rabbits and half a dozen pheasants in the shed mam for our Gareth said Richard.’

“Good man said Gareth that’s my protein sorted for a week.’

“A week said Betty, there would be enough to last Ruby and I three months.’

“My son goes shooting on the farmer’s fields when he’s not training. We get the plenty of large hares; lots of wood pigeons which keeps Gareth going.’

“I pity the woman who gets Gareth I really do said his mother.’ She will spend the majority of her day cooking.’

“Has he always eaten like this Bronwyn?’

“Actually he’s cut down a bit haven’t you son. Since playing for Wales his diet has changed a lot. He’s lost six stone haven’t you Gareth.’

Another plate was put in front of the big man with about 20 rashers of bacon then a dozen scrambled eggs. His huge fists just swallowed up a full loaf of bread as fork after fork of bacon and eggs was shovelled into his mouth. “I have a ten mile run to do over the hills today to strengthen my legs and increase my stamina.’ A man my size needs at least 10.000 calories a day.’

“I will roast you some pheasants and some fresh vegetables for your tea Gareth.’
