one after another they all died. “What the hell was the cause of death doctor asked one of the guards?’

“They were all poisoned with Amanita Phalloides said doctor Edward Nielsen.’

“What the hell are those doctor I’m not familiar with the name.’

“They were poisoned with a fungus that looks like a mushroom but is in fact better known as “The Death Cap.” These men would have suffered an agonising death as the symptoms took hold, severe vomiting, dihorrea, organ failure, and then death which  occurs between four to six hours after eating.’

“Holy shit said the guard, as he asked the doctor for a post mortem on each of the five men.

The next morning the prison was buzzing about the five men and the way they had died. Alan Stoneman had the biggest grin on his face as he made his way to the canteen for breakfast. A sample of the soup that all the prisoners had eaten was tested. It showed no signs of the “Death Cap “that the others had all eaten. In conclusion it was deduced that the five men must have smuggled the fungi into the prison thinking the fungi were the ones used as a hallucinatory drug. The cause of death at the inquest on the five men was death by misadventure.

Friday evening there was one mad rush as both Ruby and her mother packed a case. Betty white had baked some rabbit pie and a large bouquet of flowers to take as a gift to give Richard’s mother. Ruby seemed to take it all in her stride and wasn’t worried at all. When Richard came for her she looked radiant; she’d had her hair trimmed and set. She looked absolutely stunning. Betty White wore a new bonnet that she’d bought and was wearing a long grey tweed coat. It would be cold up there in Wales and both women had brought woollens and gloves to wear.

“I brought the boots from the shed and some thick woollen socks for you Ruby.’

“That’s good because we can go out together for a walk.’

Richard stored everything in the boot apart from the flowers which Betty held onto as she got into the back seat. They had to take the road from Newcastle to Durham again then drive to Leeds then onto Sheffield where there would stop for a break. Then they would drive to Leicester and onto Tamworth before taking the Strensham interchange to Hardwick then finally to Merthyr Tydfil. It was a good seven and a half hour drive.

They wouldn’t get there until 2 a.m. in the morning. Richard’s mother and stepfather were having an hour or two in bed around ten o’clock so that they wouldn’t be tired when they arrived. “Do you mind if I turn on the radio Betty, only it helps me to concentrate?

“Not at all Richard.’

Richard tuned on the classical music channel and turned the sound down so that they could all talk over it. I hope that you don’t mind Richard but I made some rabbit stew yesterday.

Well Peggy Johnson and Margaret Mallard came knocking asking if I could give them a pan for their husbands and kids so I obliged them.’

“That was kind of you Betty.’ “I can always get you more you know; the woods are full of them. No mater how many that I take; the numbers never seem to deplete. I’ve been stocking up for the winter anyway.’

“I saw them both this morning and they told me to thank you when I saw you.’
