“Just wait until you are sentenced and are put on the main wing here. They cannot get to you here on the remand wing but as soon as you go into the main nick in Durham the lags will be on you like a bloody rash. “You need to get yourself some protection mate.’

“How do I do that?’

“Get your mother to come and visit and bring a few quid in with her each time she comes.’

“You will soon find out who the daddies are around here. “You can pay them to protect you from getting shafted up the arse.’

“But I’m not homosexual.’

“It won’t matter to them because most of them aren’t either.’

“You really are green behind the ears aren’t you?’

“Look when a prisoner has been locked up a few years behind bars they begin to see things differently. These men have been deprived of sex for so long it does something to a man’s head in here.’ Walking into the showers has a whole new meaning; young boys like you become their play things. Where they can get release if you know what I mean.’ So if you don’t want to be messed with you had better get some money behind you.’ “Mind if you are caught you will be down the block faster than you can scratch your arse.’

“What’s the block?’

“Solitary confinement, a place where all you have to talk to is four walls all day long.’ You get no exercise, no washing, or bathing; you have nowhere to shit but where you sleep and the place stinks after a week. Then after a few months down there you start to become immune to the smell. “You eat the crap they give you which they spit into.

Before long you start to go crazy and talk to yourself.’ If they don’t cart you away to the hospital wing to be sectioned with all the others who have gone mad. you end up back on the main wing with no protection.

“The screws will beat the crap out of you for their own savage amusement because someone has to watch you day and night.’ “The screws don’t like it because they are down there on their own see; so in effect they are doing solitary too.’

“Why what?’

“Why do they treat prisoners like this?’

“Because they can; and they can get away with it because you have no-one to complain to.

“What about the governor?’

“Are you nuts, if you did that you’d be dead in a week?’

“Best if you keep yourself to yourself, talk to no-one and trust no-one but yourself.’

“The screws came around with supper and the doors were opened for slop out.’

Each prisoner had a plastic pot to relieve himself. If at night you want to go, you do it on toilet paper then climb up to the bars on the small window and throw it out.’

Tommy Bell jumped down from his bunk. Picked up his pot and stood and waited until his cell number was called.

“Come on stupid, follow me said Tommy, keep to the left or the screws will punch you one.’

“Albert saw Alan Stoneman, Billy Royal, and Danny McMullen.’

“They didn’t speak but moved silently along the line.
