After several months the man who has refurbished his house after the fire sees a cat like Pluto.

The cat follows him home and it like Pluto follows him around. At first he loves the cat then he notices the cat has a white patch on its chest and only one eye. He then begins to hate the cat but the more he hates the cat the more it loves him.

He begins to become afraid of the cat as it stares at him with its on eye and the white patch on its chest turns into a picture of a gallows. It was stark reminder of the crime that he had committed against Pluto.

The man is driven mad by the cat who keeps staring at him with one eye. He goes out again and returns drunk; the cat sees him and again it follows him into the house. His mind is in torment thinking that this cat is evil and has been sent by Pluto to torment him for hanging him. He takes an axe and tries to kill the cat. His wife tries to stop him and she is caught with a crushing blow to the head. She lies dead on the floor of the house whilst the cat stares at the man with its one eye. The man buries his wife in the basement behind a false wall he has created to conceal the body.

A few weeks later the police came calling at the house asking questions about his wife’s disappearance because some neighbours have reported her missing. The man tells the police that she has gone to visit her sister who is ill.

They search the house and find nothing until he inadvertently taps against the false wall with his fingers. The cat begins to howl from behind the wall where it has been buried alive and it is then that the police discover the false wall and his wife’s body.

After the trial he is found guilt of his wife’s murder and he is to be hanged by the neck the following day.

As he is led up the gallows the noose is placed around his neck. The one eyed cat comes out from the crowd and stares at the man from the front. It is the last thing the man see’s as the lever is dropped and his body drops with the rope around his neck. With eyes bulging he kicks out as he struggles in his death throws until he can struggle no more the rope tightens even more cutting off his air supply. Then the man is dead. The one eyed cat follows another man home that day.

“Wow what a story they all said as Dave closed the book.’

“God that scared the shit out of me said Barry Smith who didn’t like cats at all.’ They all made there way out of the den then headed back through the tunnel. It was now half past six and their parents would be wondering where on earth they all were.

They crawled through the tunnel and then through the break in the wire fence. They all ran up the road to their houses and said that they would all meet up at school the next day.

“One thing was certain they would never forget the Edgar Allan Poe story.’
