The driver waved before moving on.

Ruby walked down the street with an air of confidence; some of the neighbours were out and they all said hello as she passed. They’d obviously seen Richard and his car pull up.’

“We seen you out wi a fella the other night Ruby; have you got yourself a rich boyfriend then?’

“Yes, if you’d like to know. he’s a writer from Wales.’

“Really it must cost him a fortune in petrol coming all the way here then.’

“Well actually he has a huge cottage in Crook, my mam and I was there yesterday for Sunday lunch.’

“It’s a long way to go just for a roast dinner, whey we have a bit of roast every week don’t we Margaret.’

“Aye roast pigs head; they all laughed until Ruby told them that they had roasted pheasant, with a beetroot done in red currant jelly and a salad with goat’s cheese with several bottles of expensive wine for starters. “Then we ate a rich rabbit stew.’ Of course we were all full and had to walk three miles around the estate just to digest it all. When we got back Richard had made a latticed apple tart and custard.’

Really they all said; I’ve never eaten pheasant before what’s it like.’

“It’s very nice actually.’

“Listen to that Margaret said Peggy Johnston, It’s actually now is it.’

“Ask my mother she will tell you; Richard gave her two birds to take home and some freshly caught rabbits yesterday.’ She will be no doubt roasting them this Sunday.’ “Oh I forgot, we are leaving to go to Wales on Friday night to stay over at Richard’s parents house in Merthyr Tydfil so we will be feasting on rabbit pie and roasted pheasant tomorrow and the next day.’

“Feasting you say, said Peggy adjusting the pipe cleaners in her head square.’

“Do you think your mam would give us some to try asked Margaret Mallard?’ “I mean wor Jimmy and the bairns would love a bit of rabbit stew.’

“My mother has always been a charitable woman Mrs Mallard so just come along to our house I’m sure my mother will help you and the kids out.’

“Thank you Ruby, we won’t forget this, good luck wi that Welsh fella an aal.’

Ruby continued walking to her house with a big grin on her face.’

“She told her mother that the tongues were starting to wag already. I shut them up though mam when I told them all we were at Richard’s cottage yesterday for pheasant and rabbit stew.’

“Don’t be surprised if Margaret Mallard comes knocking for a pan of stew to feed her husband Jimmy and her kids.’

“Well we cannot turn them away Ruby, it wouldn’t be very Christian would it.’

“Well I’m off to get myself ready mam; Richard is taking me out to dinner tonight.’

“Are you going somewhere nice love; knowing Richard it will be expensive.’

“There’s a new restaurant in town that he’s taking me to, she lied.’

Well you had better put on that new dress that you bought for our Connie’s wedding.’

“No mam,’ I’m just going to wear that grey pencil skirt and my red blouse with a white cardigan that you knitted.’

“That is very smart; I’m sure Richard will like you in it.’

Ruby disappeared to her room and set about putting on her make up after washing herself then started to fix her hair.
