Everett Humphries packed away his case notes in his case as the four boys were led away in handcuffs.

They would be taken back to Low Newton Remand Centre in Durham then brought back to court in the morning.

The lads went down in the cells in silence they were told to sit and await the driver and the guards who had brought them from the Youth Offenders Prison.’

If they were lucky they would make supper where they would receive a meal and a hot cup of tea. They had been on remand over nine months now and although they were on remand they were treated just the same as a convicted prisoner by the guards.

An hour later and they were placed inside a black Mariah and carted back to the prison. They stood in line with others who had been put on remand that day and stripped off. Then they were given their prison clothing and taken back to their cells.

Each one of them were segregated and placed in a cell with a different prisoner.

“Bugger that, it was awful.’

“How long have you been here now?’

Nine months.’ Just wait until you’ve been here a couple of years then you’ll eat anything they give you.’

“Was there any post for me today?’

“No, who the hell would write to you,’

“My mother writes to me.’

“What about your father?’

“He done off and left us when I was about five years old.’

“I bet you are an only child right?’

“How did you know?’

“I could guess straight away.’

The lags in here would ask if there was anything from there girlfriends, you didn’t.’

You ain’t got a girlfriend have you?’

No; I haven’t.’

“So are you queer or what?’

“No I just haven’t got a girlfriend.’

“Tommy Bell laughed as he looked at Albert Reynolds. “ A seventeen year old virgin you are.’

“Albert’s face reddened with embarrassment.’

“The lags are going to love you here.’

“What do you mean?’
