After everything was placed into the oven Richard set off to pick up Ruby. He felt like an excited school child. He longed to be with her. She made him feel alive.’

She made getting up in the morning worth while. Her smile brightened his day, and the softness of her lips tormented him at night; knowing that she was not lying beside him.

Tonight though, even though it would be for the briefest of moments she would be his and his alone. He turned on the radio onto a classical music channel and listened as he drove the familiar route that he’d taken now for over a week.

The journey took him nearly an hour; he wanted to pick her up from work but decided not to. He didn’t want her to change her mind and not go with him. He reached County Durham then took the turning for Gateshead as a waltz by Johan Strauss played merrily away.

The chemist shop seemed packed to the rafters today as Ruby served what seemed like a never ending queue of people. When lunch time arrived she paid for some protection then placed them into her bag before Mr Denison had time to see.

Then she headed for the library and sat in her usual seat reading one of Richard’s books of poetry. She found one that she liked and sat reading it.

Awaken from your dreamy sleep

The sun has broken the morning sky

Lark’s first chorus breaks the night

To stir the heart and open eye

From a place where soft clouds float

Upon the ocean far away

In a warm and dreamy boat

That sails the sea till’ break of day

Your eyes so blue and hair of gold

The arms that stretch to grasp the light

Is a beauty to behold?

To gaze upon this wondrous sight

Rise up now from your feather bed

To seize the day for all its worth

Pillow’s held a precious head

Like a gem upon the earth

Wash face with hands so soft caress

Comb the silken hair of gold

Adorn with velvet woven dress

To see the angels wings unfold

Standing proud and with a stride

Make strongest men grow weak at knee

To watch you walking with such pride

A picture for the world to see
