She got to the shop and then stood in the door way shaking the rain off the brolly before going inside.

“Morning Mr Dennison.’

“There’s nothing good about it.’ look at it out there it’s like a monsoon. It will keep customers away.

“They’ve still got to come here for their prescriptions Mr Dennison. The rain might only last for a while.’

Ruby took off her coat and hung it up then put on her white smock she tied the ends of it at the side as the first customer arrived.

“What a horrible day Ruby.’

“Yes it is Mrs Hollings, what can I get you?’

“Well I would like a large jar of malt extract please and have you any vapour rub for my man’s chest. Coughing and barking all night he was.’

“Has he seen the doctor yet Mrs Hollings?’

“No,’ but if the big bugger is still coughing tonight after I rub his chest with some Vick then he’s going. “ I tell you that or I’m going to my mothers for the weekend I need my rest.’

“That will be four shillings and eight pence Mrs Hollings.’

“Thanks love.’

The woman took out her purse then counted the money out then gave it to Ruby before putting the goods into her brown leather bag and then going outside to put up her brolly.’

“Let’s hope this rain is not on for the day, see you later bye.’

Bye Mrs Hollings.

By ten o’clock the rain was still coming down in torrents and Ruby wondered if it would ever stop.

She hoped that it would or it might scupper her date tonight, Richard might not come and she would not see him again until Sunday.

The rush from the doctor’s surgery began and of course the main topic of conversation was the rain. Ruby was pleasant as she served each one in turn. She looked up at the clock wishing it was dinner time when she could go to the library

for her lunch so that she could escape from the hum drum of the shop.
