11. Back to Sleep

Chapter 11

My mouth dropped down. My head was whirring, with so many questions that I needed answered. I stared from the girl lying in lingerie on my bed to Nathan’s uncomfortable expression. We were both awkwardly silent; I didn’t know how to react. I very slowly got off the bed and began getting my clothes together when Nathan came up to me and said, ‘Let me explain.’

A part of me saw nothing but hatred towards him- He cheated. There was no explaining to do. What, would he have told me that it didn't mean anything? That it was revenge? I didn't want to hear that. A part of me didn’t want to lose him and begged to hear what he had to say in hope that this was all a mistake and nothing happened. And a part of me… A part of me felt like I’d deserved this, for betraying him so many weeks ago with this very girl. I didn’t know what to feel or how to react.

Apprehensively, I took my seat, well away from the still-asleep Sophie. I didn’t dare make eye contact with him, afraid that I’d look into his eyes and fall for everything he’d say.

‘After you left, I came home to Sophie sitting on our doorstep. She was in tears, and obviously, I’m not a bad guy, so I invited her in. I made her tea. She explained how she couldn’t go back home to her boyfriend and that it made her upset.’ He continued whispering. ‘I couldn’t just kick her out, M. She was crying so hard, so I told her that she could spend the night. Now, nothing happened, I promise. She came upstairs and I went to sleep on the sofa in the front room. I didn’t bother coming up here until I heard someone walking around.’

I looked at him in utter disbelief; I didn’t know if I could believe him. After all, he had every reason to cheat on me after what had happened. I hoped beyond words that it was the truth, because I didn’t want to lose him. He was my everything. Despite it taking every ounce of my self-control to not flip out and drag both of them down the stairs by their tongues, I nodded. I still had one question;

‘Why should I believe you?’ I asked.

‘Do you not trust me?’

‘You mean to tell me there’s a girl in your bed, laying in lingerie, undoubtedly trying to get busy with you, and you didn’t do anything?’

‘Maya- If I wanted to cheat on you, I would. But I didn’t.’ as he said that, he looked me right into my eyes. I could tell he was annoyed. He left the room, slamming the door behind him. I cupped my entire face with my hands, running my fingers through my hair. I heard his heavy footsteps echoing down the stairs, leaving the crime scene.

For once, I was so horror struck with this situation that I didn’t even know whose fault it was. I was furious to see another girl in Nathan’s bed, guilty about accusing him of cheating and curious as to why Sophie thought it was a smart idea to turn up here, given all the drama between her and I previously. I was pacing the room now, my head exploding with my worried thoughts, when I glimpsed Sophie stirring. She lazily turned over, and upon seeing my angered expression, she scattered up, covering herself with a blanket.

‘Where’s Nathan?’ she asked. She began smirking, before getting up and busying herself with collecting her belongings. I knew she was about to lie about what happened, and so I decided to play along.

‘You know, your boyfriend isn’t the smartest of people. I turned up here, fake crying about some apparent boyfriend of mine, and he let me in, just like that. One thing lead to another and well, let’s just say, now I really regret being interested in you- I should’ve taken a look at your boyfriend.’

She blew me fake kisses and turned to leave, no doubt satisfied with my sad eyes, fake-watering with tears. She pulled open the door and gasped- Nathan was leaning against the doorframe. He slowly walked in, making her stagger back and almost trip over the laundry basket.

‘It’s not good to lie Sophie. Let’s not make up stories, you tried to come onto me and I told you I’d never do anything with you. I don’t want you. You go around people’s places like a sket, thinking that as long as you show yourself off, people will do anything you like. And now, you can get the hell out of my bedroom, you’re making it reek of cheap perfume.’

She stood half-naked and on the verge of tears, then scurried away like a rat. Nathan walked up to me and gave me a long hug, stroking my hair as he did so. He kissed my head affectionately, laying me down on the bed, pulling the covers high over us and letting me rest in his arms as I fell asleep.
