Lost In The Shadows

I’m Brooklyn Addison. I prefer to be referred to by my middle name which my dad gave me: Malia. Brooklyn screams your typical stuck up, bubbly and full of life teenager but that was the old me...

19. Lost in paradise.

This is what happens when I let people brake down the many layers of trust I have, when I let them in, I get a huge stab in my back. The stab felt excruciating; when a random stranger hurts you it doesn’t cause as much pain but when someone you thought could never hurt you does, it feels like death.

“Aiden?” I asked, I had been staring at him for minutes now, trying to think of a valid reason why he would want to kill me, there was nothing.

“Malia, it’s nothing personal. Call it collateral damage.”

“And, Charlotte? Did she just call you brother?”

“You’ll know everything, all in good time, all in good… time. But for now, I need to talk to Charlotte.” He started to march towards me taking a needle out of his pocket. Aiden knelt down and stabbed me, painfully with the injection. I fought my hardest to scream, to move but my eyes gradually shut leaving me in pure darkness. “Sssh, just let it happen, it will be harder if you struggle.”

I wasn’t in control of my body anymore, it felt like I was paralysed, in and out of consciousness, then slowly but all at once; everything was gone.

It seemed like I had been sleeping for days, but it was clear I wasn’t because Aiden and the devil were standing and conspiring quietly. I could smell some kind of bacon and egg, I was so hungry at this point that I had gone past the feeling of wanting to eat actual food.

“Hello, sleepy-head. Nice nap?” Aiden remarked, immediately stopping his conversation with Charlotte. He held out a brown paper bag to me. “Sandwich?”

“No! Hurry up and kill me already. It’s better than being locked up and having you two in my presence.” I said trying to lift my head up from the cramped position.

“No, not yet Malia! I have to fill you in on all the saucy gossip.”

“Mason’s going to come for me you know, he’s going to kill both of you.”

Of course, Charlotte had to butt in, giggling, “Malia, I really hope so! Then he can watch you die, it will be so, bloody poetic.”

“You son of a…”

“Ladies, Ladies! Calm down, it’s story time.” Aiden demanded.

There had to be a reason for why Aiden had turned into this monster, I didn’t want to listen but I didn’t have a choice in the matter.

“I’m guessing Mason told you his part in this fantastic story?” He asked me.

“What are you talking about?”

“His dad?”

I nodded nervously, as he went on and on, I played with the handcuffs discreetly, they seemed lose; breakable.

“Well, you want to know who the dead man was? It was my father, my innocent father. Mason’s dad was wealthy and that made him powerful so my…our father” he stopped and looked at Charlotte, maybe they really were a crazy pair of siblings. “As I was saying, our fathers murder was ruled off as an accident because of the power that man had. He had a memorial, we grieved but then were made to forget him all because of his father! You know what, he got away with it too!” Aiden’s fists were clutched the whole time as he came to a stop in his ‘Story’, he imprinted his fist into the wall. His breathing was heavy and loud, his hazel eyes that I used to adore with so much passion, however now they looked cold and distant.

“You want to know the reason you’re here? I can’t hurt Mason’s dad, so I’ll hurt Mason and the best way to hurt someone isn’t physically. It’s mentally, he loves you and if he ever lost you then… well, his poor heart would be broken forever. I want him to fall apart like I did.”

“So this is a plan based on Vengeance, revenge?” I hissed.

“I don’t like to call it revenge, I like to say returning the favour.”

“Aiden, you don’t have to do this!”

“I’m done playing nice, I tried to make you all my friends but now I want you dead. This plan started when you were admitted to the same rehab as my sister. It wasn’t a coincidence that you and Charlotte were put in the same room and I knew you; you were heartbroken about Mia and I, so you would’ve picked some other helpless guy to get your hands on. Mason. It was the perfect idea.”

The handcuffs had finally decided to unlock, thank god. Now I just had to wait until the perfect opportunity of escaping, preferably before they tried to kill me.

Yes, it was terrible what Mason’s dad had done but it wasn’t his fault, it wasn’t my fault either. No one had to die for this.

Charlotte jumped playfully out of the blue, “Aiden! Kill her, kill her, kill her!”

He smiled and nodded, “Sorry, I really wish I didn’t have to do this. The pain will be gone in seconds, don’t worry.” He pulled out his gun from in his jacket. Held it up and aimed straight for my head. The door that Aiden came through hours before, had the littlest window where Mason’s frightened face appeared. “Distract him.” Mason mouthed.

“Stop, I need to know. Did you really ever love me?”

Aiden looked confused, “Of course I did, most of it was real.”
“So why? Just let me go, no one will have to know what happened here today.” I gulped, as I held onto the handcuffs, my hands trembled with fear.

“The beauty behind killing someone you once loved is thrilling because no one would think I would kill you. It’s amazing!” he chimed as Charlotte sat back twiddling her fingers together waiting for the exciting moment.

Quickly, Mason stormed through running towards me, I built up all of the strength I had left, getting up. Trying to barge past Aiden. I didn’t know Charlotte had a gun. I heard a gunshot but didn’t feel remotely anything in my body, I didn’t feel what I thought death would feel like. That’s when I realised Aiden hadn’t pulled the trigger on me, Charlotte had at Mason. Slowly, I saw him fall to the ground. Blood surrounding him. I ran over to him placing his body in my arms, he wasn’t so heavy anymore. My eyes widened with shock, the blood wouldn’t stop gushing out of his abdomen. “I’m sorry, no! Mason, you have to keep your eyes open, stay with me!” Tears fell onto his pale face, “Stop crying, I want my last memory of you to be happy.” Mason whispered as he shakily lifted up his hand wiping the tear from my face. He was freezing, I rested my hand in his. “I love you.”

“I love you…” In a blink of an eye, the life started to flow out of him like his blood. I weakly gave him one last smile. As I let out a scream, one that would pierce through your soul, I shut his eyelids down. He didn’t look like he just died, the horror from his face had now disappeared, he looked as if he was merely in a deep sleep. I felt like someone had ripped a piece of me out, shrieking over and over again, rocking Mason’s cold body in my arms. The cry tore through me like a glass shard, my pulse quickened and my heart thudded like a rock in a rattling box. It was the kind of scream that made your blood run cold, piercing the brain.
