Lost In The Shadows

I’m Brooklyn Addison. I prefer to be referred to by my middle name which my dad gave me: Malia. Brooklyn screams your typical stuck up, bubbly and full of life teenager but that was the old me...

13. Lost and Motels.

Chapter Thirteen

As I clutched onto Mason’s waist, my frizzy locks of hair felt like they were going to fall off my head. My life was in the hands of the craziest guy I knew and I loved it, it was thrilling. “WOOOHOOO!” I screamed.

Three months had past, summer break was nearly coming to an end. We had travelled all around the states; Portland to Boston to Texas to Seattle to Hawaii. Stopping in small, run down Motels on the way. I had never felt freer in my whole entire existence. From cliff jumping in Hawaii to dancing in the rain under the night skies of Portland. We done everything that I didn’t even think was possible, for them three months I had lived my life more than I had done in the last seventeen years. All was fun and games but it didn’t seem right, I was supposed to be creating these memories and experiencing these new things with Aiden.

We reached our last hotel for the summer, we had planned to go sky-diving that next morning but I just couldn’t stay with him, I needed to make up with Aiden.

“Hey.” I started to say to Mason as I lifted the bed covers, “I need to go home tomorrow.”

“What? I thought we were having a good time.”

“I know, we were…we are. But, I need to sort things out back home.”

“By sort things out, you mean Aiden, don’t you?” Mason sighed.

“You don’t need to explain yourself, you love him and I was just too late.”

After changing into my pyjamas in the bathroom, I took off the lights and climbed into bed.

“Mason.” I turned, facing him. “All of this, everything that has happened. It was just fun, it didn’t mean anything, you know that right?”

Mason didn’t say a word, I could just see the outline of his head nodding slowly. I assumed that all the romantic things we did together were just for fun, well I thought that anyway but by the looks of it, it meant a lot more to him than it did to me. I didn’t even think he was capable of human emotions. We even slept in the same bed together without it being weird, I thought “No strings attached” but he obviously thought different. I immediately regretted saying anything; he seemed hurt.

After hours of trying to sleep; I picked up my phone from underneath my pillow and leant in closer to Mason to see if he was still asleep. Going back to my position, I slowly typed the words…

Me: Are you awake?

Responding within seconds, I got a reply from Aiden.

Aiden: Yes.

Me: I’m surprised you’re still up.

I wasn’t really surprised, I just had to say something.

Aiden: I’m surprised you texted.

Me: I missed talking to you, about the random things late at night.

Aiden: I miss it too, but every time we talk I’m reminded of why I loved you and all the pain comes back ten times worse.

Me: But…

Aiden: No, listen. I don’t think I can do this again, you getting my hopes up and then just getting disappointed. I think you should go to sleep, Malia.

Me: I’m not going to sleep, I will never give up on you. You’re stuck with me whether you like it or not, Aiden.

After that, he stopped replying. As soon as I got back tomorrow, I was going to his dorm to sort things out. He applied for early stay so he could get away from his parents. This was another reason I needed to speak to him, we were going to be living within walking distance of each other in the same University. It was over an hour drive away from back home so he was never getting away from me.

Slowly, my eyes opened to a shirtless Mason walking around the motel room. When he realised I was awake, he jumped suddenly. “Sorry, I’ll put some clothes on I thought you were asleep.”

Laughing, I said with my croaky morning voice, “It’s alright, nothing I haven't seen before.”

“We’re setting off in about an hour, I’m going to get us some breakfast. Pancakes? On the way here, I saw this little truck.”

“Oooh, sounds good to me!”

As he put on his burgundy t-shirt and his leather jacket, I thought to myself: he should walk around shirtless more often.

Quickly I jumped into the shower and chucked on some clothes, it had only been ten minutes and he was back already. He walked in through the door with two brown paper bags and a big smile on his face.

“You look,” pausing “Very happy!”

“Well, I’ve just seen something very beautiful.”

“And, that is?”

“Well, you of course.”

Blushing hard, I took the bags from his hands. He shouldn’t make me feel like this, could you love someone and still have feelings for someone else? I didn’t like that two humans had so much control over my mind and my thoughts.

After taking my last bite of my golden syrup pancakes, I looked at Mason. “Last night…”

“Malia, I told you that you didn’t have to explain yourself to me.” Mason said, forcing a smile.

I moved closer to him, gently placing my hand on his leg, looking him in his deep dark brown eyes. “I really, really like you. We’ve had so much fun together.”

I sighed, “I don’t know how I feel. I care about two amazing people and I know I can’t have both. So, I don’t want to hurt either of you. Just give me time to think, you’re taking me home today but I promise you… we will see each other again. As cheesy as it sounds, I need to see you again.”

Mason smiled.

Mason’s motorcycle speedily drove through LA as I held onto his waist tightly, shouting into his ear, “This is exhilarating! AHHHH!”

After twenty more minutes of screaming, crushing his ribs and bursting his ear drums, he pulled up outside of my house.

“This isn’t a goodbye, Mason.” I promised, tip-toeing and leaning into him for a long hug. He lifted me up higher so I didn’t have to tip-toe for any longer. “This is a: See you soon.” I said, giving him a quick kiss on the cheek. I ran over to my porch before he could say another word.
