Lost In The Shadows

I’m Brooklyn Addison. I prefer to be referred to by my middle name which my dad gave me: Malia. Brooklyn screams your typical stuck up, bubbly and full of life teenager but that was the old me...

3. Lost and Kisses.

Chapter Three.

Weeks went by and I hadn’t talked to Aiden once, the amount of times I wrote out a text to send to him but my trust issues always got in the way. Surprisingly, I missed them flirty comments of his, I missed his cute grin, I missed when he used to hold my hand and I just missed him.

After my first two lessons, I went to the bathroom as usual and sat in one of the cubicles listening to music. It sounds disgusting, but It was much better than being surrounded by people that don’t like you and vice-versa. Everything was good until I heard some familiar voices. “Maddison, just leave her alone.” I heard a girl say, who sounded very much like Alexa, it was. “I will never leave her alone. You do not simply, leave the girl that broke up me and my boyfriend.” She was right.

“What does it matter to you anyway? She is a lonely little cry baby, who has mummy issues.” That was enough, it probably wasn’t smart but I went out there anyway.

“Shut up Maddison.” Now, I think of it, I should’ve just stayed in the cubicle because what happened next was…bad. “Oh, here’s our favourite lonely little cry-baby.” I rolled my eyes so hard, I was scared they were going to roll back into my brain. “Oh, come on. Everyone in this bathroom knows it’s true. You haven’t got friends, a boyfriend...” I couldn’t let her get away with this so I said, “That’s not true. I have a boyfriend.” They all laughed. “Darling, if you’re talking about that Aiden boy, you’re funny. Hilarious in fact. He probably just felt bad for you.” She hissed, like the snake she is. “Like your boyfriend did? Because he seemed to like it when I kissed him.” I smiled, devilishly. Maddison threw herself on me, but Alexa pulled her back. She turned around, took a deep breath and said, “if you aren’t lying, bring your boyfriend to our Valentine’s day party! It’s in two weeks, everyone is going. I don’t particularly want your company but this should be hilarious.” I was shocked, I never thought I’d have to prove to her.

As I walked away, I instantly regretted that whole conversation. I didn’t know how I was supposed to make Aiden agree to being my fake boyfriend when he wasn’t interested in even being my friend right now.

When school ended, I had to go to work but immediately after I rode my bike Aiden’s house. Frantically, I walked back and forth outside his house for a good half an hour. Someone shouted from the window. “Malia! What are you doing here?” A few minutes later he opened the door, looking confused. I always seemed to make him feel confused. I exhaled a breath that I didn’t know I even had because I was wheezing so hard. Panic attacks and Asthma didn’t mix nicely with each other. “Well, I just wanted to say I was sorry. I’m really sorry, I didn’t mean anything I said. It’s just sometimes I…” I lost my breath. “Sorry, I’m rambling.” I laughed but his face was straight the whole time waiting for me to finish my apology. “okay, I’m not really good at these things. Um, so…” Aiden cut me off and began to say, “Jesus, I can’t watch this. It’s fine, you’re Malia and I know you don’t really do apologies. So, I’m grateful for the effort.” I felt bad because I had a bad motive to be apologising. I smiled and waited there awkwardly, fiddling with my thumbs. “Come in if you want.” My face dropped, I wasn’t good with people let alone meeting people’s parents. “Oh jesus, my parents aren’t in Malia.” I laughed and said, “I lov…like that about you.” First tip of being “friends” with boys, especially the ones that like you, never say ‘Love’ around them. “What do you, ‘Lov… like’ about me huh?” he mocked me, annoyingly. I followed him into the house, it was huge. “That you seem to read me so well.” I said as he grinned.

After a couple hours of movies on the sofa, he sat up and looked at me. “What is it?” he asked. I tried to look confused even though I knew what he was talking about. Still looking at the credits on the tv, I said “What do you mean?” He sighed, “Come on, what is it that you want from me? Malia Addison does not simply apologise to someone.” I laughed at how well he knew me from only a couple of weeks. “Well, I did mean the apology I just didn’t want to say it but…” I looked down, still not looking at his face. “You’re probably going to kill me…” he rolled his eyes, “Malia, just say it for crying out loud.”

“I may or may not have told Maddison, Lydia and Alexa that me and you were, you know…” His face lit up, surprisingly. “Nope, I don’t know.”

“You’re really going to make me say it aren’t you?”

He chuckled, like hand on his belly, Santa Claus style.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

I put my head in my hands and whispered It.

“Can’t hear you Malia.” I looked up and gave him the biggest evil look possible.

“FINE. I told them that you: Aiden Carson and Me: Malia Addison… are dating, boyfriend and girlfriend dating. Okay? Happy?”

He pretended to sit and think as he stroked his chin. “Hmm, and what would you like me to do about this?”

“Well, there’s this Valentine’s Day party that I kind of agreed to go to with, with you.” He done his ‘thinking’ face again and said, “Sorry, nope. No. Can. Do.” I sighed, my social life (my non-existent social life sorry) was over. “You see, I was kind of hoping to spend Valentines Day with my Girlfriend, it’s our first Valentines day together.” My face dropped as he said the word Girlfriend. All this time and he is only telling me now? What an idiot!

“And, who is your girlfriend?” I asked raising my eyebrows.

“Oh Jesus, I thought you were smarter than that…” he mocked me, again.

“Her name is, Malia.” Everything clicked and I sounded and looked extremely stupid.

“Well, personally… I think your girlfriend…” using quotation marks around the ‘Girlfriend’ “…Would like to go to that party. Love in fact.”

Picking up his phone and dialling he whispered, “Let me just ask her quickly.” My phone began to ring as he put the phone to his ear.

Incoming call from Aiden.

I answered the phone, playing along.

AIDEN: Hello Girlfriend.

ME: Hello.

I paused and looked at him. “Really?” and he nodded.

ME: Boyfriend.

I shivered slyly.

AIDEN: Would you like to come to this Valentine’s Day party with me Girlfriend?

I sighed deeply and said…

ME: I would love to.

Saturday Morning.

“Malia! There’s a parcel for you.” My dad shouted from downstairs, annoyingly waking me up from my precious sleep. “Coming!”

After ten minutes of trying to push myself out of bed, I got up and went downstairs. I made some oats and went back upstairs with my parcel. I teared it open because it read: “Malia Addison” on the front. Because my official name is Brooklyn no brands or companies ever use my name Malia but this person knew and I could only think of one person that it would be from. As I opened it, a card dropped out.

((For tonight,

Lots of LOVE, your boyfriend!))

He was having way too much fun with this. In the box, I saw something red so I picked it up and realised it was this gorgeous red dress. I instantly tried it on and looked in the mirror. I absolutely loved it. It was a Red Silky, sweet heart line dress that went down to my knees.

Before I walked out of the house, my sisters came running to the door. “Ooooh! You actually look pretty!” Ava screeched.

“We’re being positive today Malia, take it as a compliment.” I murmured to myself. Mia screamed as she pointed, “Who’s that? Who’s that? Who’s that?” They both bolted outside heading for Aiden’s car. I ran over, in heels for once, pulling them back. “I will choke you both with each other’s hair, don’t you dare.” Aiden found this amusing and got out of the car. “Well, hello. You must be Malia’s sisters, huh?”

“Yep, are you Malia’s boyfriend?" Ava asked in a normal voice. He looked at me and sarcastically smiled as he said “Yes, yes I am.”

“INISDE NOW!” they ran to the door, probably scared for their lives. “Watch when I get home you two little…” I had forgotten Aiden was standing behind me just laughing at my irritated self. I exhaled slowly and got in the car. As he started to drive he said, “I knew it would look amazing on you.” I didn’t say anything, I just smiled but I could see him looking at me through the wing mirror.

When we finally got there, I saw Maddison’s house and it just reminded me of my childhood. She had this huge mansion that we used to run around in like maniacs.

“Are you alright Malia?” I looked at him and then realised I had been staring at the house for ages. “Oh yeah, just thinking. Come on lets go.” I put my hand on his and then immediately questioned it.

When we walked in, we saw there were people everywhere. “You ready babe?” Aiden said.

“Did you just seriously call me babe?” I chuckled and cringed at the same time. “Yeah, if we’re going to do this, then we have to do it right.” I nodded and put out my hand. Yeah, he thought it was all about the whole ‘Act’ but deep down I secretly loved it. I felt so warm and protected.

Maddison came walking up to us. "You came Malia and you brought Aiden!"

Aiden said, "Yes, she did. A couple cannot be apart on Valentine's Day!" Aiden said back squeezing my hand as a sign of reassurance. Maddison nodded, looking furious that her amazing plan had failed. I could see her mind ticking, scheming already. She went over into the living room and grabbed a mic, "Well everyone! It's time to have some fun! Everyone get your Boyfriend and Girlfriends and let's play some truth or dare!"

I darted a frightened look at Aiden and whispered, "Kill. Me. Now."

Aiden laughed, "Oh don't worry! This should be fun." He started to lead me to the living room before he said, "Oh and you can't really talk about suicide in front of these people." He laughed and I couldn't help but laugh too. As we sat in the circle, Aiden slowly put his arm around me. I shot him a threatening look. "What the hell are you doing?" I said, still trying to smile, we wanted to seem like a happy couple. "It's all a part of the act, babe." He said, pulling me closer into him. I looked across the circle and spotted Maddison staring at us.

“Okay everyone, so I have a bottle here. I’m going to spin it and whoever it lands on; gets a pick between truth or dares. Is that good?” Everyone cheered, loudly.

The game went on for a long time, most people picked ‘Dare’. Lydia span the bottle and it landed on me. Great. The first person to shoot up their hand was, of course that scheming little cow Maddison. “Kiss Aiden!” my face dropped as my cheeks flushed vibrantly. I whispered to Aiden, “That little…” People stared at us, waiting. I just quickly pulled Aiden closer to me and our lips locked. I had discovered a place I had never been before, where darkness and light existed, in a battle for recognition. It was magic, the way our lips connected, something inside of me changed, something that could never reverse. As I pulled back, I noticed people were cheering the whole time, the kiss was only for a few seconds but it felt like ages. I wanted it to last forever but he could never know that.

After the game was over, everyone got back up to dance. ‘A thousand years’ came on and all of the couples got up to slow dance. Aiden got up, putting his hand out. “May I have this dance?”

I smiled and said, “Yes, you may.”

As we swayed to the music, I put my arms around his neck and he put his arms around my waist gently. “So, truth or dare was fun.” He laughed.

“Mmmmh.” I buried my head in his chest as the song played, too embarrassed.  We both knew we shared a moment there…
